7 Career Transition Strategies: Lawyers Who Hate Their Jobs ...

There is a third option.? Take steps to change those aspects of your current job that bother you most. ?For example, a business litigator I worked with hated that he was handling a disproportionate share of the depositions, especially out-of-town depositions.? His situation worsened when two other litigators who handled depositions left the firm.? He was now on the road more than two weeks out of every month.? And this was only one reason he hated his job.

He initially failed to appreciate that, as fewer people were available to handle depositions, his bargaining power increased.? Moreover, he had worked at his firm for more than five years, and therefore had built up some goodwill.? He had options beyond deciding whether to accept his current situation or leave the firm. He could also ask the powers that be to hire another person capable of handling depositions.? This could include someone from a temp agency.? He could also ask for an additional paralegal, so that he could spend less time preparing for depositions.? This is obviously a partial list.

The important thing is to recognize that you often are in a position to ask your current employer to address certain aspects of your job that dissatisfy you.? And some of the things you might ask for are much more likely to be granted by a boss who has worked with you for years than someone who just met you two weeks ago at your initial interview. There is no guarantee that your current employer (or business partner) will say yes or that you will be otherwise pleased by their response, but at least recognize that you aren?t stuck in a binary situation.? You have options, including asking your employer to make changes that will make you happier.

2.? Ask for Work-Related Changes at the Right Time.? You could march down to your boss? office and demand that certain changes be made.? That doesn?t mean you should do it right this second. ?All things being equal, you want to leave on your terms and at a time that is most convenient for you.? When it comes to asking for changes to your current situation, the basic principal is simple:? the more significant the changes you will be asking for, the further along you should be in your job transition process.? In the example described in the prior paragraph, asking the firm to hire another attorney from a temp agency was less significant than asking to be taken off the case.? Thus, you can generally ask for a minor change even if you have absolutely nothing lined up in terms of another job.? But, for example, if you work in an office with three partners, and you want to ask never to work with one of them ever again, you should probably be close to lining up another position.? In fact this is the kind of request that might make sense to make after you have received another job offer, but before you have decided to accept it.? So what kind of changes can you request now? ?And what changes ?are you better asking for when you are closer to finding a different position?

3.? Distinguish Between the Short Term and the Systemic.? Two people who work in adjoining offices at the same employer can have entirely different work experiences.? That?s why it?s important to be able to distinguish between temporary circumstances that are bothering you, as opposed to something more systemic?factors that are extremely hard to avoid and largely stay the same from assignment to assignment, and project to project. If you want to make wise career choices, you need to get beyond the feeling that you hate your job.? Don?t get me wrong.? I?d rather you acknowledge that you hate, despise, or loathe your job than to be in denial about it.? But knowing you aren?t happy isn?t enough.? If you want to do something about it, you need to better understand what aspects of your job make you dissatisfied.? How else will you be able to avoid finding yourself in this situation in some other job?

One of the best places to start is to figure out who or what external factors are contributing to your unhappy feelings. ?Ultimately you are responsible for how you feel, but what external factors are contributing to that feeling?? Is it a combination of circumstances such a client, deadline, or boss?? Is this a temporary situation or what passes for normal at your job?? ??I once worked on a transportation-related lawsuit that bored me. ?My involvement in the lawsuit lasted nine months.? At times, that assignment seemed endless, but ultimately it was a temporary situation. Once it ended I felt much happier doing other kinds of work at the same firm.? How about you? ?Are your work-related problems temporary or systemic?

4.? Save Money.? Simply put, money in your bank account helps make the career-transition process work more smoothly.? This is especially true when you feel that you have no idea of what you want to do next.? It generally takes more time for lawyers to figure out what they want to do next than it is to find a new position once they know the direction in which they want to travel.? One of the first things you can do is to get your financial house in order. ?It can be tempting to splurge and buy an item that you feel will make you happier.? Some people call this retail therapy.? They will justify the purchase by seeing it as a reward that makes up for their job.? They commonly say, ?I may hate my job but at least it allows me to by X.?? Resist this temptation. Whether or not you end up wanting to start a new business, take a lower paying job, or be able to quit your job, money in the bank will help.? More importantly, saving money will help you feel like you are more in control.? That, in and of itself, can help you focus on what changes to make rather than on wallowing in misery.

5.? Start Your Day by Working on Your Agenda:? Lawyers (and others) who hate their jobs often complain that they feel that their job feels endless. They use different images to describe what they feel. ?Some compare themselves to a hamster on a wheel; others like they are trapped in a maze.? Regardless of the image, it boils down to feeling powerless and overwhelmed.

The antidote is to exercise some kind of control.? It can be difficult for a partner or associate at a big firm to carve out as much time as they would like to conduct a full-blown job search, so start small.? Begin every day avoiding your voicemail and emails and take 15 minutes to complete a career-related task ?And yes, this really does work best when you do it first thing in the morning.? That?s the best time to make that phone call, send that message, or research a particular entity.

6.? Use Precedent in a Helpful Way.? Making a career change is not governed by stare decisis.? Too many lawyers look to precedent to determine what kind of career changes they can make.? This is an understandable tendency.? You don?t want to reinvent the wheel, and it can be helpful to know what kinds of career changes other lawyers have made. ?For example, lawyers who are considering becoming journalists can take comfort from others, such as Charlie Rose and former CNN host Catherine Crier, who made that transition before them.? For every relatively common career transition (employment attorney to HR executive, litigator to law school professor, transactional lawyer to business executive), there are countless more esoteric examples (lawyer to bakery store owner or lawyer to television producer).? In fact, so many lawyers have at this point left the practice of law that you would be hard pressed to make a change that someone else hadn?t previously made.? That?s the most helpful way to look at precedent and careers transitions by lawyers.

7.? Surround Yourself with Supportive People.? This may strike you as counterintuitive, but for many lawyers the biggest threat to a successful career transition is isolation.? I know lawyers who have thought about leaving their jobs for years before they mention it to a single person.? It can be difficult to find people who will understand and appreciate your desire to make a change.? Family and friends?the very people you often rely on?can be especially reluctant to help lawyers leave the law.? In an effort to be helpful, they emphasize the perceived risks associated with making a change.? This is a much more common problem than many lawyers recognize.

So what do you do?? Find people you can talk to about your desire to switch jobs or careers.? You may need to enter unchartered waters and talk to people you currently don?t know, but the sooner you can get out of your own head and interact with people who are at the very least not threatened by your desire to explore a career change, the easier the process will be.? And with a little luck, you will find people who enthusiastically support your desire to find more fulfilling work.

How about you?? What career-transition strategies have you found to be the most helpful?

'Grey's' Chyler Leigh speaks about Lexie's death

Karen Neal / ABC

Chyler Leigh's Lexie died with Mark (Eric Dane) by her side on the season finale of "Grey's Anatomy."

By Jenna Mullins, E! Online

Everyone has seen the "Grey's Anatomy"?finale, right? Good. Because Chyler Leigh (finally) has something to say about Lexie's tragic death.?

Since the finale aired last month, Leigh has remained mum on her character's exit from "Grey's," so our only closure was what executive producer Shonda Rhimes?told us about the deaths.?

More from E!: The mob doctor

Until today! Leigh has broken her silence with a statement issued to E! News, and here is what she has to say:?

"Earlier this year, I made the decision that season eight would be my last on 'Grey's Anatomy.' I met with Shonda and we worked together to give Lexie's story appropriate closure. I am very lucky to have worked with this amazing cast and crew for five seasons. My experience on 'Grey's Anatomy' is something that I will treasure for the rest of my life. I want to take this time to say thank you to the fans. Your unconditional love and support have made these last five years very special for me. I look forward to my next chapter and I hope you will continue to follow me on my journey."?

After the finale aired and the screen faded to black, Shonda took to?Twitter?to confirm that both Lexie and Teddy would not be returning next season.

"This finale was incredibly hard to write. I did not enjoy it. It made me sick and it made me sad. We end the season not knowing ANYTHING about the future. Except for two things. We know we are definitely saying goodbye to two of my favorite people: Chyler Leigh (Lexie) and Kim Raver (Teddy)."?

More from E!: "Game of Thrones" finale preview?

She continued:?

"I love Chyler and I love the character of Lexie Grey. She was an important member of my 'Grey's' family. This was not an easy decision. But it was a decision that Chyler and I came to together. We had a lot of thoughtful discussion about it and ultimately we both decided this was the right time for her character's journey to end. As far as I'm concerned Chyler will always remain a part of the Shondaland family and I can't wait to work with her again in the future."?

Feel better, Lexie fans? Or will no kind words from Chyler close the wounds caused by her heartwrenching death in the finale??

Sabbatini leads Memorial as Tiger lurks

DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) ? That other Rory ? Rory Sabbatini ? played his best golf in the worst weather Friday at the Memorial and made a surprising appearance atop the leaderboard. Right behind him was a Tiger Woods that looked all too familiar.

Sabbatini played bogey-free over his final 12 holes, and despite missing a 5-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole, put together a 3-under 69 in the cool, blustery conditions at Muirfield Village to take a one-shot lead going into the weekend.

Woods looked strong for the second straight day, though he also had another double bogey that slowed his progress. What pleased him was controlling his ball in the wind for plenty of birdie chances that led to a 69.

"I hit the ball well all day, and it was a day that I needed to," Woods said. "The wind was blowing out there, swirling in those trees, and it was just a tough day."

It was plenty tough for Rory McIlroy.

The U.S. Open champion, who returned to No. 1 in the world only four weeks ago, missed the cut in his third straight tournament. McIlroy was in good shape until a shot just outside a creek hit the bank and went backward into the water, leading to the first of two double bogeys on the back nine. He shot 79 and missed the cut by three shots.

"I'm definitely hitting the ball better than I did last week, so I can see an improvement there," he said. "But I've still got a long way to go."

It was tough for everyone on a day that began with a two-hour rain delay in the morning. That softened the course, but the wind featured gusts strong enough that it was difficult to attack the pins. It showed in the scores.

Sabbatini was at 6-under 138, the highest score to lead the Memorial in 22 years.

"We basically just kept the ball in play all day, and that's the challenge out there," Sabbatini said. "And we did that very well, and I'm very, very excited, very content with the way that things went."

Woods has 72 wins on the PGA Tour, one away from tying Jack Nicklaus for second on the career list. What better place to catch him than on the course Jack built, though Woods wasn't ready to entertain such thoughts only halfway through the tournament.

And while he commands attention at Muirfield Village ? a four-time champion who has shot par or better in 22 of his last 23 rounds on this course ? there were plenty of possibilities going into the weekend.

Spencer Levin (72) and Scott Stallings (73) played in the morning and joined Woods at 5-under 139.

Jim Furyk, another former champion, matched the best score Friday with a 68 and was in the group only two shots behind. There were 21 players within four shots of the lead, a list that includes Quail Hollow winner Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson, Henrik Stenson, Lucas Glover and Adam Scott, who was contending for the lead until closing with three straight bogeys for a 72.

The surprise was Sabbatini. He has missed the cut eight times this year, and his only top 10 came at the season opener in Kapalua, when he was 10 shots behind. The spunky South African has been toiling with his swing coach, Rick Smith, and for all the work they have done with his swing, even more crucial was keeping his patience.

"It's definitely shown me I have to be a little more patient out there," Sabbatini said. "There's nothing that's going to get achieved in an instant. You've got to make sure that you take your time and just make sure that you continue to run the process, and ultimately things will change."

That's what happened Friday, when Sabbatini made a couple of bogeys in his opening six holes. It started to turn with a 15-foot birdie on the ninth, and he was solid the rest of the way. He took care of the par 5s with good wedge play ? both those holes were into the wind ? and picked up a key birdie on the 14th to a back pin, leaving it below the hole and making a 12-foot birdie.

Woods did little wrong at the start except for missing a few birdie putts inside 10 feet and failing to take advantage of the par 5s. Even so, he didn't come close to a bogey until he reached the par-3 12th hole, which played into the wind. The question was how much wind.

Woods was trying to decide between an 8-iron and a 9-iron on the 159-yard hole over the water, guarded front and back by bunkers. He watched Fred Couples hit a 6-iron that a big gust knocked down and deposited in the water. Woods went with a 7-iron that he hit like a bullet, over the water, over the green, into the gallery. From there, he hit a poor flop shot that didn't reach the green, chipped to 10 feet and missed the putt to take double bogey.

"I didn't feel comfortable hitting 7," Woods said. "I thought I had to take a lot off of it, but I didn't want it to ride, so I started it way left and just bailed out on it, hit it long. And I drew a good lie. It was just a bad chip shot."

He recovered with a wedge into 6 feet for birdie on the 15th, then a tee shot that covered a front flag on the par-3 16th and settled about 8 feet away.

Woods, coming off his worst three-tournament stretch as a pro, said he played as well as when he won at Bay Hill to end a 30-month drought on the PGA Tour.

"The things that I'm supposed to be doing for the past few tournaments, I was able to do," he said. "This is the way that I hit the ball at Bay Hill and the way I hit it at the end of last year. That's what's exciting about it."

Chris Brown 'Should Be Respected,' Bobby Brown Says

'The boy is talented, and you can't take talent away. He's a bona fide entertainer,' veteran singer tells MTV News.

Bobby Brown has been on the road with New Edition over the past few months for the group's 30th anniversary tour, and as the veteran entertainer gets ready to drop his fifth album, The Masterpiece, he's showering praise on contemporary stars like Chris Brown, Trey Songz and Usher who have furthered his R&B legacy.

During the height of New Edition's popularity in the '80s, Brown cemented a bad-boy image that stuck with him throughout the years, sometimes to his detriment. The new generation of R&B singers have faced their own unique challenges after being thrust into the spotlight, and maybe none as obvious as Chris Brown. Still, Bobby Brown thinks the young star isn't doing too badly for himself. "He's good; he's a church boy compared to me," Brown told MTV News matter-of-factly.

"Chris Brown is incredible. [He's] an incredible dancer, incredible singer. I respect him a lot because he's held his head up throughout everything that he's been through," Brown said, addressing the singer's much-publicized assault case against ex-girlfriend Rihanna. "He's only been through a little bit, but the boy is talented and you can't take talent away. Talent is given from God, you can't learn what he does. He's a bona fide entertainer and he should be respected."

Despite the setbacks Chris Breezy has faced, Bobby Brown is confident that he has what it takes to stick around in the long run. "He's still young and he's got a long way to go. I'm 30 years deep into this entertainment thing and I could see him 30 years from now, still doing what he does — flipping and singing and dancing," Brown continued. "And now he's getting ready to do a movie, so he's covering the spectrum of entertainment."

Chris isn't the only millennial entertainer who gets praise from Bobby Brown, though. "Trey Songz is definitely a talented brother, he's a talented writer, talented singer," he adds. "I just love the new generation of R&B singers, I think they're upholding what entertainment is about. I got it from Rick James and Michael Jackson, and I'm just grateful that they're taking what I love, what I'm passionate about, to the next level and keeping it young and fresh."

Usher, who will release his new album, Looking 4 Myself, just one week after The Masterpiece drops on June 5, is also on top of the list. "Before Usher even had a record out, I was training him, I'm surprised I didn't put him out," Brown said. "I worked with him a lot, teaching him different ways of training your body to dance and I'm proud of him. I'm glad he kept everything together."

Brown will continue his mission to entertain the masses with The Masterpiece, which is his first album in 14 years. And although he's got respect for the new crop of singers, he maintains that he needed to fly solo this time around. "This project is about me as an individual and me as far as growth in my life, so I didn't really want to go all commercial with it, and to make it something that became a spectacle." Brown admitted. "This is all about Bobby right now. It's just to get this off my heart and once this is released and people are able to hear it and appreciate it, then I can move forward with my life."

The The Masterpiece, is set for release on June 5, led by the single "Don't Let Me Die."
