Feds Seize Assets From Mt. Gox's Dwolla Acount, Accuse It Of Violating Money Transfer Regulations

Bitcoin exchange service Mt. Gox is experiencing some issues with U.S. authorities. The Department of Homeland Security issued a seizure warrant to Dwolla for the money in Mt. Gox’s Dwolla account. Mt. Gox users can’t use Dwolla as a funding option anymore even though it was one of the most popular options. The Japanese startup failed to register in the U.S. as a money transmitting company — president and CEO Mark Karpeles now faces up to five years in prison. Dwolla had no choice but to proceed with the request. IDG News obtained a copy of the warrant through the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the investigation team of the Department of Homeland Security. In order to accept funds in dollars, Mt. Gox opened a Wells Fargo business account for Mutum Sigillum LLC (Mt. Gox’s American subsidiary). The company had to complete a document that states whether it provides money services or not. The warrant reads: “That document was completed on May 20, 2011, and identified Mutum Sigillum LLC as a business not engaged in money services.” In particular, Karpeles answered no to two important questions: “Do you deal in or exchange currency for your customer?” and “Does your business accept funds from customers and send the funds based on customers’ instructions (Money Transmitter)?” If the ICE feels the need to emphasize those questions, it means that the DHS probably believes that Mt. Gox is both a money transmitter and a currency exchange service. Mt. Gox should have registered with FinCEN to limit fraudulent activity — it is a requirement for money services in the U.S. As Bitcoin is an independent and anonymous currency, many observers believe that it is used for money laundering and paying for illegal drugs. It could be the DHS’s main concern. The exchange service is still working fine. So far, Mt. Gox wrote the following statement on its Facebook page: Like many who have contacted us, MtGox has read on the Internet that the United States Department of Homeland Security had a court order and/or warrant issued from the United States District Court in Maryland which it served upon the Dwolla mobile payment service with respect to accounts used for trading with MtGox. Donald Trump will decide between the musician and the magician on Sunday's finale.

This season of "Celebrity Apprentice" has certainly seen its fair share of friction between cast members, from Trace Adkins' battle with Marilu Henner to Gary Busey turning on his teammates in the boardroom. While the show's final two contestants, Adkins and magician Penn Jillette, may be good pals off-camera, Donald Trump says that we can expect a little friendly feuding on Sunday's finale.

"We have a tremendous cast of celebrities that each of (the finalists) have brought with them," Trump said during a conference call with the press Thursday. "It?s a very tough group of people.The game is played very hard, it?s a little bit nasty in a couple of cases but overall I think it?s going to be great television."

Trump told reporters that he has no clue who he will choose to hire during Sunday's live finale.

"Sometime I know and sometimes I don?t," he said. "I will tell you honestly, in this case, I don?t. A lot of times I will have a pretty good idea as to who it?s going to be. I?ll give you an example, when Bret (Michaels) won. They flew him here in an ambulatory plane. He was almost dead three days before, with the heart and the whole thing. (Michaels had a stroke that was later tied to a hole in his heart.) He could barely walk on the stage. Honestly, I think if I hadn?t chosen him I would have been run out of town!"

Although "Celebrity Apprentice" is now in its 13th season, Trump said has no trouble finding celebrities that are willing to risk facing him in the boardroom.

"Casting the first time was hard because nobody knew what to expect after we went to the celebrity concept," he said. "After that, it became really easy to get people to sign on. It really has been good for people's careers."

Trump added that celebrities want to be a part of his show because it doesn't require them to do anything they normally wouldn't do, unlike those other star-based reality shows.

"The nice thing is that they don?t have to dance and they don?t have to do things that maybe aren?t in their comfort zones but they get this tremendous popularity if they have what it takes," Trump said. "So it?s easy to cast, actually."

Although they won't be dancing, Jillette and Adkins said they will be putting their talents to use on Sunday's finale.

"Trace is going to do a song, and I?m going to play bass with him," Jillette said. "And I?m going to do some magic with Teller, so besides the 'Celebrity Apprentice' there will also be magic and music."

While it may seem odd that Jillette will join his competitor Adkins in a jam session on the show, Trump said it's because the final two share a friendship rarely seen in the final two.

"One thing that?s a little bit different is that these guys genuinely like each other," he said. "Usually we have people that get into the finals that do not like each other. I usually like that better, by the way. These two people really like each other, but it?s still great television."

Apple looks to add Samsung Galaxy S4 to patent infringement suit

Apple says Samsung's new flagship smartphone "is an infringing device"

Apple will move to have the Galaxy S4 added to its patent infringement case against Samsung, court documents reveal. In documents filed with the U.S. District Court in California and published by The Verge, Apple says it has examined the handset and "concluded that it is an infringing device." As such, it will add the GS4 to its list of infringing products, but remove one of the existing 22 so as to abide by the court's request that it limit the number of claims and devices.

The list currently includes such phones as the Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy Note, Note 2, Note 10.1, U.S. Galaxy S2 models and the Galaxy S3.

FBI to probe U.S. tax agency's actions on conservative groups

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Attorney General Eric Holder said on Tuesday he had ordered the FBI to open a criminal probe in a growing scandal over the Internal Revenue Service's targeting of conservative political groups for extra tax scrutiny.

Holder announced the Justice Department investigation as the tax agency's embattled acting commissioner, Steven Miller, traveled to Capitol Hill for meetings on the scandal amid Republican lawmakers' calls for his resignation.

The scandal has added to a sense of a White House under siege as President Barack Obama, who has promised to hold any IRS wrongdoers accountable, grapples with an array of domestic and foreign policy controversies that threaten his second-term agenda.

On Friday an IRS official revealed that the agency had inappropriately singled out conservative groups, some associated with the Tea Party movement, for extra scrutiny of their claims for tax-exempt status.

"I have ordered an investigation," Holder told reporters at a news conference. "FBI is coordinating with the Justice Department to see if any laws were broken."

He said that the actions disclosed so far "were, I think as everyone can agree, if not criminal, they were certainly outrageous and unacceptable, but we are examining the facts to see if there were criminal violations."

There were growing calls on Capitol Hill for the resignations of Miller and Lois Lerner, head of the IRS tax-exempt organizations office. Lerner apologized on behalf of the agency when she revealed the targeting of conservative groups last week.

Conservatives had complained about mistreatment by the IRS for years.

Miller was due to meet Senator Max Baucus, the Democratic chairman of the tax-writing Senate Finance Committee who has promised an investigation by his panel.

'HEADS NEED TO ROLL'

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky urged Obama to make all who knew about IRS misconduct available for questioning, and said there should be "no more stonewalling."

"Heads need to roll today," said Republican Representative Vern Buchanan of Florida, a member of the House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee.

The panel oversees the IRS and is scheduled to hold a hearing on the scandal on Friday.

Despite efforts by some conservative commentators to cast the IRS troubles as something akin to the Watergate scandal of the 1970s - or to former President Richard Nixon's use of the IRS to target his political enemies - there was no sign of White House involvement in the matter.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said the results of independent investigations must be known "before we can jump to conclusions about what happened, whether there was a deliberate targeting of groups inappropriately and, if that's the case, what action should be taken."

The IRS - which is supposed to be a nonpartisan agency - has suddenly found itself dragged into partisan politics at a time when it is also under increasing pressure to make rulings on campaign finance issues and matters related to Obama's healthcare overhaul.

Police identify suspect in New Orleans shooting

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - New Orleans police on Monday identified a suspect in connection with a shooting at a Mother's Day parade that injured 19 people, including two children, as residents expressed outrage over the violence.

Police said the suspect, 19-year-old Akein Scott, remained at large but had been identified by multiple people.

"The time has come for him to turn himself in," New Orleans Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas said.

Serpas said Scott was last arrested in March and has a criminal history that includes charges for possessing narcotics and a firearm and resisting arrest. Police investigated three addresses linked to Scott but could not find him, Serpas said.

Earlier on Monday police released photos that they said showed a suspect in the shooting, which led to tips that helped with the identification.

"People today chose to be on the side of young, innocent children who were shot, and not on the side of a coward who shot into a crowd," Serpas said.

The image singling out the suspect did not clearly show a face, and police, who released the photographs on YouTube, asked for the public's help in identifying and finding the person. A $10,000 reward was offered for information that might help find the shooter.

The photographs, taken from a surveillance video, first show crowds of people in a street, and then the crowd is seen scattering and ducking. The final image focuses on what appears to be a man in a white shirt leaving the scene on foot as other people are lying on the pavement.

Ten men, seven women and a girl and a boy, both 10 years old, were shot when one or more people opened fire at the parade on Sunday. The children were grazed but in good condition, police said.

Serpas earlier on Monday said he had not ruled out that the shooting was gang-related or that there was more than one shooter.

Violent crime in New Orleans ranks above the national average in FBI surveys. A poll of residents in 2010 found crime to be their greatest concern.

Residents gathered Monday evening with religious leaders and Mayor Mitch Landrieu at the site of the shooting to voice their anger and discuss solutions for cutting crime.

"To all the young people who are committing the violence... I don't understand why jail is such a cool place to be. You're a coward," said Jessica Strange, a social worker.

Many of the people at the outdoor meeting had also attended the parade, which the sponsoring neighborhood club said it hoped to hold again in June depending on permits.

"We all came out here to basically reclaim this spot and to say what happened yesterday on this spot does not reflect what the people of New Orleans are or what we are about," Landrieu said.

"Yesterday was a symbol of a much, much deeper problem ... and the people of New Orleans are here today to say it's unacceptable and has to stop," the mayor said. "Nobody out there is at fault but everybody is responsible."
