Clinton defends administration record on Israel

(AP) ? Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is dismissing Republican criticism of President Barack Obama's record in supporting Israel and says U.S. aid would be the highest ever.

Pressed at a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing, Clinton told lawmakers Wednesday that the administration has pledged its strong support for Israel and put more money behind that pledge than any other administration. Obama is seeking $3.1 billion in military assistance for Israel in next year's budget, which would make it the largest recipient of U.S. aid.

Republicans have questioned the administration's budget request for a joint U.S.-Israeli missile defense program, arguing that it's too low. In fact, the amount is close to the current level.

The election-year criticism comes ahead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to Washington next week.

Mobile World Congress: Best of day one

The year's largest display of up-and-coming mobile phones, Mobile World Congress, has gotten off to a good start ? especially for Android. Check out a list of our favorites from day one of the conference.

Mobile World Congress, one of the largest gatherings of phone makers, is always full of good surprises. And this year?s show is no exception. Already during the first day of the conference in Barcelona, big-time manufacturers from Sony to Samsung have showcased new Android phones aplenty ? one of which actually has a built-in projector. Here are three of the most appealing phones from the show so far.

Samsung Galaxy Beam

Just as the name suggests, Samsung?s latest Android phone serves as a mini-projector, displaying ?anything on its screen in 640 by 360-pixel resolution. (We?re already imagining life-size Temple Run projected onto a wall.) The Galaxy Beam is a littler thinker than a normal phone, but remains less than half an inch thick. Samsung says the phone can project for about three hours straight on a single charge, and judging by CNET photos, projections are bright and clear. Initially, the idea of a projector brings back memories of elementary school science class ? but in reality, it?s one of the great untapped technologies of mobile phones. If it delivers, the Beam will be able to cut out the many cords and frustrations that come with linking up computers/phones to televisions and other screens. Good for business presentations, great for playing games and video.

HTC One X

This is the Incredible Hulk of Mobile World Congress so far. It?ll have a Tegra 3 quad-core 1.5 GHz processor, for extra zippy speeds. But don?t get too excited. The American version of the One X swaps out the quad-core for a SnapDragon S4, but throws in a 4G LTE antenna for a faster Internet connection. Both editions come with a ton of attractive features ? a 4.7-inch, 1280 by 720 HD screen and a camera capable of shooting a photo every 0.7 seconds. It also runs on the latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Plus, it?s pretty sleek.

HTC also announced the HTC One V, a decidedly less enchanting phone than the X, but it?ll probably be more affordable. The One V has a 3.7-inch, 800 by 480 pixel screen and runs on Android 4.0. We?d equate it to the iPhone 4 ? not quite the 4S, but still good.

Sony Xperia U

Hey, it?s definitely not the next powerhouse phone. But it?s not pretending to be, either. Sony?s Xperia U is one of the latest smart phones that?s aiming for an audience unwilling to shell out a ton of cash. Its 3.5-inch screen makes it easy to hold, and its 5-megapixel camera is less than, say, an iPhone 4S 8-megapixel camera, but that comes with the territory. Still, it looks like the Xperia U has some cool music features, such as surround sound and wireless streaming to speakers. Now, that?s a perk.

As MWC continues, we?ve still got a few hopefuls to look out for ? Windows 8 phones, please! ? but progress is steady thus far. Some phones will join a long list of others in anonymity (who remembers the HTC ChaCha last year?), but we?re hoping at least a few will go the distance.

Droid 2 users, get ready for a new SOAK test

Motorola Droid 2

Here's a question -- what's 18 months old, and still getting updates? The Motorola Droid 2, that's what. We just got a tip about an upcoming SOAK test for a new software release for the D2, which was launched in August of 2010. In Android-time, that makes it a dinosaur, and seeing Motorola still working on updates makes us happy inside. Let's be honest -- while the D2 is a bit shy of the current generation of amazing specs we're seeing on upcoming phones, it's still plenty capable and has a large following. And many users are still under their two-year contract. They deserve this sort of treatment. Nice work, Moto.

Granted, we have out doubts that this will be a major OS update, but bug fixes and security patches are the important issue -- a phone should work as advertised and have security holes patched as long as possible.

Motorola makes it clear in their correspondence with potential testers that this is not for the Droid 2 Global, nor is it for the R2D2 model. Hopefully, they are next on the list. Other details are anybody's guess, we only know that there's going to be a test soon, and that Motorola is looking for members in good standing of their Feedback Network who are still sporting the Droid 2.

When more happens, we'll let you know.

Thanks, anon!

Chinese netizens 'occupy' Obama's Google+ page

BEIJING: US President Barack Obama's Google+ page has been flooded with messages from Internet users in China after the social networking site suddenly became accessible in the country.

Every current topic on Obama's Google+ page attracted hundreds of messages in Chinese.

Some contributors made jokes, while others said they were 'occupying' the site in the style of western Occupy campaigns, The BBC reports.

Some users appealed for the liberty of civil rights activist Chen Guangcheng, who is under house arrest.

Others asked about a recent political intrigue in south-west China, in which one of the country's top policemen, Wang Lijun, spent a day in the US consulate in Chengdu for undisclosed reasons.

Google+ is normally blocked in China along with other social networking sites as the government authorities call them 'unacceptable'.

Since Google+ was launched in 2011, software known informally as the Great Firewall had appeared to block it within China.

But on February 20 internet-users in many parts of China found they could gain access to the site.

Meanwhile, the White House has not commented on the upsurge of Chinese interest in Obama's campaign site. (ANI)

Find It Games ? The Parade of Animals Puzzle (Giveaway)

Is it a game? Is it a puzzle? It?s both! Thanks to Find It Games the girls can now enjoy double the fun with their new interactive The Parade of Animals Puzzle ($13) that provides hours of fun.

The Parade of Animals puzzle portrays a world of creatures to behold when Noah gathered them as depicted in this significant event of historical relevance. In this beautiful artwork commissioned from painter Rachel Land is a vivid image of animals from across the globe ? from pandas to koalas.

This 300-piece puzzle was a fun change to our usual board game night. It took us about 2 hours to complete the entire puzzle but when we were done the kids felt a real sense of accomplishment. I admit that even I had fun talking and laughing with the girls while we tried to match colors and images. Of course, we let Kiana (6) work on the boarder while Kacie (9) and I tackled the harder middle sections.

In the end we had a beautiful work of art that showcased an important time in history which we took the opportunity to discuss in further detail.

However, not only did it provide an educational history lesson but it also introduced the girls to a few animals that they never heard of before. Included in the box is a pamphlet that describes the 40 different animals which can be found throughout the jungle scene and the girls had so much fun taking turns on locating them. Some were very challenging to find especially if they blended into the background.

There are currently 2 other scenes available in this series of puzzles ? On Dry Ground and Pharaoh?s Egypt ? and we?ll definitely be checking those out in the future. This is such a great idea that combines fun and education and we can?t wait to see if Find It adds even more scenes to their puzzle collection!

So Much For Bouncer: New Android Malware Uses Facebook To Spread

android-logo170Even though Google recently introduced a malware-blocking system called Bouncer to keep the Android Market safe from malicious software, crafty spammers and fraudsters are still managing to find ways around the restrictions to get their software onto users' phones. The latest example? A malware program disguised, innocuously, as an Android app called "any_name.apk." And it appears the malware is using Facebook's app on Android phones in order to spread.

Blood mystery solved

Friday, February 24, 2012

You probably know your blood type: A, B, AB or O. You may even know if you're Rhesus positive or negative. But how about the Langereis blood type? Or the Junior blood type? Positive or negative? Most people have never even heard of these.

Yet this knowledge could be "a matter of life and death," says University of Vermont biologist Bryan Ballif.

While blood transfusion problems due to Langereis and Junior blood types are rare worldwide, several ethnic populations are at risk, Ballif notes. "More than 50,000 Japanese are thought to be Junior negative and may encounter blood transfusion problems or mother-fetus incompatibility," he writes.

But the molecular basis of these two blood types has remained a mystery ? until now.

In the February issue of Nature Genetics, Ballif and his colleagues report on their discovery of two proteins on red blood cells responsible for these lesser-known blood types.

Ballif identified the two molecules as specialized transport proteins named ABCB6 and ABCG2.

"Only 30 proteins have previously been identified as responsible for a basic blood type," Ballif notes, "but the count now reaches 32."

The last new blood group proteins to be discovered were nearly a decade ago, Ballif says, "so it's pretty remarkable to have two identified this year."

Both of the newly identified proteins are also associated with anticancer drug resistance, so the findings may also have implications for improved treatment of breast and other cancers.

As part of the international effort, Ballif, assistant professor in UVM's biology department, used a mass spectrometer funded by the Vermont Genetics Network. With this machine, he analyzed proteins purified by his longtime collaborator, Lionel Arnaud at the French National Institute for Blood Transfusion in Paris, France.

Ballif and Arnaud, in turn, relied on antibodies to Langereis and Junior blood antigens developed by Yoshihiko Tani at the Japanese Red Cross Osaka Blood Center and Toru Miyasaki at the Japanese Red Cross Hokkaido Blood Center.

After the protein identification in Vermont, the work returned to France. There Arnaud and his team conducted cellular and genetic tests confirming that these proteins were responsible for the Langereis and Junior blood types. "He was able to test the gene sequence," Ballif says, "and, sure enough, we found mutations in this particular gene for all the people in our sample who have these problems."

Beyond the ABO blood type and the Rhesus (Rh) blood type, the International Blood Transfusion Society recognizes twenty-eight additional blood types with names like Duffy, Kidd, Diego and Lutheran. But Langereis and Junior have not been on this list. Although the antigens for the Junior and Langereis (or Lan) blood types were identified decades ago in pregnant women having difficulties carrying babies with incompatible blood types, the genetic basis of these antigens has been unknown until now.

Therefore, "very few people learn if they are Langereis or Junior positive or negative," Ballif says.

"Transfusion support of individuals with an anti-Lan antibody is highly challenging," the research team wrote in Nature Genetics, "partly because of the scarcity of compatible blood donors but mainly because of the lack of reliable reagents for blood screening." And Junior-negative blood donors are extremely rare too. That may soon change.

With the findings from this new research, health care professionals will now be able to more rapidly and confidently screen for these novel blood group proteins, Ballif wrote in a recent news article. "This will leave them better prepared to have blood ready when blood transfusions or other tissue donations are required," he notes.

"Now that we know these proteins, it will become a routine test," he says.

This science may be especially important to organ transplant patients. "As we get better and better at transplants, we do everything we can to make a good match," Ballif says. But sometimes a tissue or organ transplant, that looked like a good match, doesn't work ? and the donated tissue is rejected, which can lead to many problems or death.

"We don't always know why there is rejection," Ballif says, "but it may have to do with these proteins."

The rejection of donated tissue or blood is caused by the way the immune system distinguishes self from not-self. "If our own blood cells don't have these proteins, they're not familiar to our immune system," Ballif says, so the new blood doesn't "look like self" to the complex cellular defenses of the immune system. "They'll develop antibodies against it," Ballif says, and try to kill off the perceived invaders. In short, the body starts to attack itself.

"Then you may be out of luck," says Ballif, who notes that in addition to certain Japanese populations, European Gypsies are also at higher risk for not carrying the Langereis and Junior blood type proteins.

"There are people in the United States who have these challenges too," he says, "but it's more rare."

Ballif and his international colleagues are not done with their search. "We're following up on more unknown blood types," he says. "There are probably on the order of 10 to 15 more of these unknown blood type systems ? where we know there is a problem but we don't know what the protein is that is causing the problem."

Although these other blood systems are very rare, "if you're that one individual, and you need a transfusion," Ballif says, "there's nothing more important for you to know."

Concordia research chair releases new book on a lasting controversy

This release is available in French.

Montreal, February 22, 2012 Modern consumers of mass media have long been swayed by the notion that secret, invisible messages are embedded in everything from radio commercials to Hollywood blockbusters. With his new book, Charles Acland takes an in-depth look at the complex history of subliminal influence, and questions what the lasting implications may be for our information-saturated modern world.

In Swift Viewing: The Popular Life of Subliminal Influence, Acland, a professor and research chair in Concordia's Department of Communication Studies, traces the evolution of subliminal influence from a concept in experimental psychology to a mainstream belief about what he calls "our vulnerability to manipulation in an age of media clutter."

Since theories of subliminal influence first found their way into mainstream culture in the late 1950s, public-opinion surveys have shown that up to 70 percent of respondents think that advertisers use subliminal techniques, whether the message is to buy a particular product or to confirm to a certain way of thinking. For Acland, the idea of subliminal influence, regardless of its existence or direct effectiveness, indicates an "extraordinary faith in the power of even the most fleeting words, sounds, and images to shape our unconscious."

By providing a broad survey of examples ranging from Marshall McLuhan's media theories to representations of mind control in sci-fi movies, Acland examines the subliminal as "both a product of and balm for information overload." In so doing, he creates what acclaimed author Fred Turner calls a "much-needed and frighteningly contemporary history."

Through the historical sweep of Swift Viewing, Acland shows that the concept of subliminal influence has its origins as far back as the late 1800s. His detailed chapter on the tachistoscope, a tool used to quickly slide images past a viewer's eye to measure the length of exposure necessary for perception, demonstrates that we have had "a fascination with the rapid arrival and departure of texts" for more than a century. By tracing this fascination through its mainstream adoption and subsequent debunking that there are any actual effects, and following its continued traction in everything from presidential campaigns to episodes of TV's Family Guy, Acland proves that this concept has staying power and is specifically connected to the way we understand our audiovisual surroundings.

Ultimately, Acland shows that the continued engagement with the concept is one way "individuals share scepticism about their environment," a scepticism prompted by the daily barrage of information that defines present-day media culture.

As a result of continuous economic instability, the cost of living in several places all over the globe rises, the same is true in terms of foodstuffs. Take time in growing vegetables at home so in case you want to eat fresh crops, you already have some all you have to do is pick it up. Heading to the supermarket just to purchase some fresh veggies is no longer needed the moment your crops are ready for harvest.

One clever idea to remember to enjoy veggies fresh from your back garden for the entire year is to figure out appropriate crops to nurture. You might get used to buying ingredients in the market in cooking a cuisine so once you grow vegetables you can cook something and feel better. Some other members of the family might not be fond of eating fresh vegetables so search on possible ways on how to make foods yummy.

The advantage of having a mini vegetable garden beside your home is not only towards you alone but for all the members of your family as well. Compared to the veggies available in the market yielded from farms, veggies grown at home is better to eat for it is free from any pesticide. Instead of heading to the fast food chains and ordering foods with excessive fats and calories, it is better to go on with fresh fruits and veggies.

You can get rid from suffering from various vascular problems associated to incorrect diet because fresh goods are beneficial for your health. Aside from vitamins, some goods contain dietary fiber for better elimination and Potassium for better muscle and brain functioning. If you have extra space at home, try to start cultivating it but of course, you have to prepare all tools needed such as fruit cages, trowel, rake and others.

It is excellent to invest in sturdy gardening equipments if you have extra funds but you can go for cheaper sorts as well for it is just all right. Pest and insects might destroy the plants so you have to build long lasting fruit cages to make sure that plants will grow as healthy as possible. You can get rid from mowing your lawn upon starting to cultivate the soil at the same time enjoy fresh goods during harvesting.

Avoid using weak materials in building fruit cages because animals might get into it and destroy the plants inside each cage. So make it durable and long lasting as much as possible to protect the fruits of your labor.

What does ?home? mean to you? - Family Promise of Gallatin Valley

Graduated family Nancy and Austin in their new home

?

Merriam-Webster?s Dictionary defines home as:

one?s place of residence,?the social unit formed by a family living together, or?a familiar or usual setting?:?congenial environment.

But what does ?home? mean to you?

I grew up in a quiet town in Northern Idaho. Our neighborhood played ?Kick the Can? at night until dark. Our family enjoyed summer BBQ?s and building snowmen during the winters in our back yard. Home was safe. Home was a healthy community. Home was constant.

At Family Promise many families come to us who lack something very important: a supportive network or a community. That is why our program is different from a traditional homeless shelter.

Family Promise focuses on the importance of relationships. Our volunteers provide a supportive network of listening ears, hugs and encouragement for families going through a ?housing crisis?.

Since I began working for Family Promise I have realized that the idea of home is relative to each person. To me home has become less about an address and instead more focused on the idea that ?home is where the heart is? or where your community is fostered.

The goal of our program is to help our families regain their independence. We do this by supporting the whole person-not just their housing needs. We work on budgeting, childcare, parenting skills and other vital life skills that our families can use once they graduate our program.

Yes, the goal of our program is to help our families end their issue of homelessness. However, it is deeper than that.

Each day we are supporting our families. Loving our families. And in the process we become part of their family.

Our volunteers and staff are the family members who are invited to baby showers, graduations and birthday parties of our past and present guests. We truly become a family during each guest?s time in the program.

Join us in the fight to end homelessness, one family at a time. This year, make a resolution to build a relationship with a family that needs a little extra support.

After all, don?t we all need a place and a community to call home?

Women protest 'land grab' by military : Tamil News Network (TNN)

Home ? Featured, News

20120220132954land400 Women activists in northern Sri Lanka have strongly protested a move by the military to construct a new army camp in Eluthoor, Mannar.

The Women Rural Development Societies from nine villages in eastern Sri Lanka say they held a meeting to discuss their concern over the allocation of land along Tharavanlottai road.

The army camp is to be constructed adjacent to a tank constructed by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) to be used by resettled families from the surrounding villages especially for washing and bathing.

"The UNDP constructed this tank that gets rain water flowing through a canal from surrounding villages," said a statement issued by the (WRDS).

The activists, in a petition to Sri Lanka government, have appealed not to construct the camp in the allocated land and move it to any other part of Mannar.

Banner Advertisement Disadvantages Of Free Banner Exchange

Published by witter | February 20, 2012 | | 3

In order to effectively promote your website, you need to use good promotion methods on your website. Banner advertising is one way of promoting an online business. Banner advertisements contain graphic and other informative elements. Looking at the images on a banner can give a better picture of the company. Perhaps this is why banner advertisements get more clicks than they used to in the past.

There are many sites that provide banner advertising services. All you have to do here is pay them monthly and ask them to put your banner on their site. This may help you get visitors from their website to your own site. This would also increase your sales. Getting profits will be a great deal faster than waiting for search engine optimization techniques to work. If you do not want to go for paid banner advertisement services, you can always opt for the free ones. Only remember that it comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages.

Free banner exchange is basically a free service which allows you to exchange banners with some other website. Here, both the sites are supposed to agree to put the others? banner on their site. Your banner will be placed on their site and theirs on yours. Since it is free, it does have its disadvantages.

The very first disadvantage is that there are not many sites to exchange banners with. You cannot exchange your banner with many sites because then you will end up with a lot of banners on your own. And, the more banners you have, the more time your website will take to load. Your visitors do not like waiting patiently for loading of websites and they might just exit. If you are running an affiliate website, then banner advertising may not work for you. People will click on the merchant?s banner that contains their website?s link and not yours.

Some sites employ the use of black hat techniques for their site?s search engine optimization. These sites also place many banner advertisements on their site. These sites do not have any content and are likely to be banned by Google. If you exchange banners with them, you will gather bad reputation for your own site. Therefore, carry on an extensive research on the site you are planning to exchange links with. Make sure that the site is reliable and safe.

Will President's Day Weekend Be A Fun Family Day Or More Work ...

2915413359 2f4d4ca77a 199x300 Do You Find Weekends Easier Or Harder With Your Toddler?

Our weekends might include bagels

The weekend is upon us, and this one is a long one, at least for me and the kids. ?My Preschooler has Monday off, and my husband is working.

Regardless, even though I love the weekends because we?re all together, I sometimes find them more challenging than the rest of the week.

Our schedules are off. ?The kids usually go to bed later if we?re out and about or have dinner with friends. ?When we stay home, they can get cabin fever, which is a whole other animal.

It?s much more difficult to get them to nap on the weekends. ?In fact, my preschooler naps at school every week day but refuses to nap on the weekends.

Then, there?s moments like last weekend, when I thought I was going to lose it after a sugar-filled birthday party. Luckily, that situation worked out.

But meanwhile, I really love doing things together as a family. I love that there?s no pressure to go anywhere at any specific time, and that we don?t have to rush people out of the house in the morning. I love to ?go to our favorite bagel place and the local airport to watch the planes take off and land. We see ?friends and go to parties. ?It?s also nice to share the bedtime routine duties.

Weekends are almost always more exhausting than what goes on during the week, so when Monday rolls around, I?m usually ready, especially with an extra day.

How about you? Do you find weekends harder or easier than during the week?

Michael B. Keegan: 99% of Women Have Used Contraceptives. The ...

Fighting contraception. Stopping domestic violence protections. Extending tax cuts for the wealthy, while hiking taxes on the middle class. Welcoming white supremacists to a conference, but banning gay conservatives. The GOP has followed its extremist fringe off the deep end, leaving the rest of us back in the reality-based world, and befuddled. Their strategists warned them not to do this, but it appears that to the GOP, unhinged fringe issues are like catnip.

It wasn't a surprise to see Republican luminaries, including Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich and Mitch McConnell flock to major conservative conference last week that also included a panel session featuring a white supremacist. But it was ironic that this same event, the Conservative Political Action Conference, banned a group of gay conservatives from participating, accusing them of alienating so-called "family values" groups like the Family Research Council (FRC).

The banned group, GOProud, is hardly radical, even by right-wing standards -- it split from the Log Cabin Republicans because it thought the older group was too concerned with gay rights. Beyond pushing the much feared "The Gay Agenda," now just being gay excludes you from the biggest conservative conference of the year. Being a white supremacist gets you on a panel.

This year, CPAC banned the gays to gain back the FRC -- and white supremacists came as a bonus. The leaders of the GOP -- including a few aspiring leaders of the free world -- came along for the ride.

But CPAC was just the beginning of what has been a surreal week for a major political party. On Friday, President Obama announced a compromise with Catholic leaders who objected to religious institutions being included in the contraception coverage mandate for employee insurance. The compromise, which spared Catholic institutions from providing contraception coverage while ensuring that female employees would still have access to it, was not enough for the Catholic bishops and GOP leaders. Instead, they announced that they wanted a rule that would allow any employer to renounce any insurance coverage for any procedure they find morally objectionable.

Anyone who has ever had health insurance knows that that's an extreme position -- allowing employers to pick and choose what procedures they'll provide insurance for? -- but it's one that Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich and the leaders of the House and Senate GOP jumped right on.

And attacking contraception is just the beginning. Republicans in the Senate are blocking a reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act because it includes protections for LGBT people and undocumented immigrants. The Virginia House just passed a bill that would require women seeking abortions to undergo an invasive trans-vaginal ultrasound without their consent, and another that would put access to birth control at risk. The latter, a so-called "personhood" bill, is so extreme a similar measure was rejected by Mississippi voters by double digits last year -- yes, that Mississippi. Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, who is widely considered to be a top candidate for the GOP vice presidential nomination, has said he will sign the forced ultrasound bill and may sign the "personhood" measure.

Finally, on another issue important to millions of American families -- middle class tax cuts -- the GOP gave in and joined the rest of us in reality. While Republicans had been making rumblings about repeating their disastrous stunt in December where they threatened to raise payroll taxes on working Americans because the cost would be offset by a miniscule tax on the very rich, they ultimately gave in -- while leaving lower-profile but equally important issues of extending unemployment benefits and fixing Medicare payments for doctors in the lurch.

Where is the mainstream of the GOP? And why aren't they speaking up? 99 percent of American women who have ever been sexually active have used birth control. 59 percent of Americans think all employers should have to provide comprehensive health insurance to their employees -- including to women. Sixty-six percent think the wealthiest should pay a bit more to help all Americans get by in a bad economy. As of last year, 56 percent said gay and lesbian relationships are "morally acceptable" -- and although I haven't seen polling, I'd bet that the "morally acceptable" number for white supremacists is significantly lower.

Polls are polls and politicians shouldn't govern by them, but shouldn't they notice when they're falling off the deep end? The GOP, in pursuing the agenda of the most extreme factions of its base, has left moderates within its own party and American common sense behind. This isn't just bad for them politically -- in the long run, it's bad for the country. There are plenty of serious issues that demand our attention -- jobs, housing, the energy crisis, crumbling infrastructure. But instead of tackling these, the GOP seems determined to fixate on a parade of dangerous nonsense.
