(AP) ? Tiger Woods feels like he is making up for lost time by missing the U.S. Open last year.

Woods wasn't at Congressional for the 2011 U.S. Open, so it was difficult for him to compare the opening round Thursday in the AT&T National with the major known as the toughest test in golf that was played at Congressional a year ago, the one that hardly lived up to his reputation.

But he listened to Nick Watney and caddie Chad Reynolds, who confirmed his suspicions.

"They were saying at least during the Open, you could get it to land on the green from the rough," Woods said. "They had graduated rough. There's no graduated rough here this week. If it's not in the fairway, then it's in the deep stuff. So it's a different setup. It's hard and fast, and we have to be careful a lot of times, and when you have an opportunity to be aggressive, better do it."

Bo Van Pelt did it better than anyone.

He kept bogeys off his card and picked up an extra shot when his wedge spun back into the hole for an eagle. It's a formula that would work well at a U.S. Open, which is what Congressional felt like Thursday on his way to a 4-under 67 and a one-shot lead.

Woods, who struggled at times with his wedges, opened with a 72 and was starting to feel that this was his third U.S. Open of the year ? Bay Hill, which was firm and brittle in the final round and yielded only two rounds in the 60s; and Olympic Club two weeks ago, which really was a U.S. Open and was won by Webb Simpson at 1-over par.

"A couple shots today, the ball is bouncing as high as it flies," Woods said. "It's an adjustment we have to make."

Congressional took a beating last year when unfavorable weather conditions in the weeks leading up to the U.S. Open and overnight rain during the championship made the venerable Blue Course a pushover. Rory McIlroy had a record score of 16-under 268 for an eight-shot victory.

The AT&T National was more of a grind.

"It's certainly, I think, a little retribution for what happened last year," Woods said. "Don't be mad at me. I didn't play."

A year ago at the U.S. Open, there were nine rounds in the 60s and 21 players broke par in the opening round. On Thursday in the AT&T National, only seven players were in the 60s and 22 broke par. Four players failed to break 80, just like a year ago, only the 120-man field at the AT&T National is filled with PGA Tour players. For the U.S. Open, two of those rounds in the 80s were by amateurs, a third by Ty Tryon.

"I think everybody knows the golf course last year just wasn't quite ready to be set up the way they wanted it to be set up, and it's unfortunate," Van Pelt said. "I know they spent a lot of time and money to get it ready, and some things are out of your control. I said it last year ? they needed one more year, and basically you could have a U.S. Open here this week if you wanted it.

"That's the way it's set up."

The sunshine and heat figure to make it tougher over the next few days, especially on the weekend.

Watney, the defending champion (at Aronimink) who was in the large group at 70, said the more fair comparison was with the U.S. Open held two weeks ago at The Olympic Club. Michael Thompson led after the opening day at 4-under 66, and Simpson won at 1-over 281.

As for Congressional?

"If last year was a 4 out of 10 on firmness of greens, this was a 7 trending to an 8," Watney said, who didn't major in economics at Fresno State.

Van Pelt only twice struggled to make par, making a 30-foot putt on the 15th and a 20-footer on the par-5 sixth hole. Equally impressive was his bunker shot on the 18th to tap-in range, and he took those vibes to the first hole. After an aggressive drive, he had 93 yards to the hole and figured it was a good time to put to test all the work he has done on his wedge play. It worked out better than he imagined, holing it for an eagle.

"I actually thought it had kind of spun back in front of the hole, and all of a sudden this guy behind the green started going nuts," Van Pelt said. "You never know when those are going to happen, so it's nice to get a deuce."

Even better was not making a bogey and giving himself a good start going into his Friday morning start of the second round.

Woods never got it going, and he made two blunders late in the round with his bunker play, which also was suspect in the U.S. Open two weeks ago. After making a 15-foot birdie putt on the 14th, he put his approach into the bunker right of the green on the 15th. His shot barely got out of the sand, and he stubbed a chip, leaving him a 7-footer that he had to make for bogey.

On the next hole, he was 244 yards from the hole when he pulled a 4-iron to the bunker short of the green on the par-5 16th. The gallery groaned when the ball emerged from the bunker and barely got onto the green, costing him a reasonable birdie chance. He two-putted from 30 feet for par.

Woods attributed it to the amount of sand in the bunkers and that his 60-degree wedge "is not built for this much sand."

"So I have to make an adjustment and hit the ball a little bit closer, make sure I hit a little closer to the golf ball," he said. "And I just didn't do it."

Cybercrime disclosures rare despite new SEC rule

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Hackers broke into computers at hotel giant Wyndham Worldwide Corp. three times in two years and stole credit card information belonging to hundreds of thousands of customers. Wyndham didn't report the break-in in corporate filings even though the Securities and Exchange Commission wants companies to inform investors of cybercrimes.

Amid whispers of sensational online break-ins resulting in millions of dollars in losses, it remains remarkably difficult to identify corporate victims of cybercrimes. Companies are afraid that going public would damage their reputations, sink stock prices or spark lawsuits.

The chairman of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., is adding a provision to cybersecurity legislation that would strengthen the reporting requirement. The SEC's cybersecurity guidance issued in October is not mandatory. It was intended to update for the digital age a requirement that companies report "material risks" that investors want to know.

Rockefeller's measure would direct the SEC's five commissioners to make clear when companies must disclose cyber breaches and spell out steps they are taking to protect their computer networks from electronic intrusions.

"It's crucial that companies are disclosing to investors how cybersecurity risks affect their bottom lines, and what they are doing to address those risks," Rockefeller said Friday.

The SEC recently challenged Internet retailer Amazon's decision to omit from its 2011 annual report references to the online theft of customer data held by Zappos, an online shoe company owned by Amazon. Amazon eventually agreed to modify the statement slightly, according to correspondence between the company and the SEC. But the company still argued that the Zappos attack was not covered by the commission's cybersecurity guidance because it had no material impact on Amazon's business.

Cybercrime is rampant and not confined to the United States. The head of Britain's domestic spy agency said this week that cybersecurity ranks alongside terrorism as one of the United Kingdom's most pressing security challenges. In one recent case, an unspecified, London-listed company hit by a cyberattack incurred revenue losses of $1.2 billion, MI5 Director General Jonathan Evans said in rare public remarks in London. He did not identify the company or say which country was behind the attack. The U.S. has said China and Russia are the governments most frequently engaged in such hacking.

"What is at stake is not just our government secrets but also the safety and security of our infrastructure, the intellectual property that underpins our future prosperity, and the commercially sensitive information that is the lifeblood of our companies and corporations," Evans said.

Research by a cybersecurity expert shows dozens of Fortune 500 companies have lost a wide range of valuable information to cybercrimes, including intellectual property, bank account credentials, restricted data about patients of pharmaceutical companies and internal legal records.

Rodney Joffe of Neustar, an Internet infrastructure management company in Virginia, monitors networks used by online criminal groups and traces the origin of stolen information. He found evidence that 162 out 168 companies in the manufacturing, chemical and transportation sectors had been compromised. The names of the companies are being kept confidential for proprietary reasons, he said.

"No one is safe. Everyone is compromised," said Joffe, Neustar's senior technologist. "When people tell you, 'We are protected as a company,' they are really fooling themselves."

The SEC isn't tracking how many companies comply with its cybersecurity guidance. But publicly traded companies historically have resisted supplying information about cyber incidents because it highlights their weak spots, said Peter Toren, a former federal prosecutor with the Justice Department's computer crime division.

"It just doesn't look good," Toren said.

The breach of Wyndham's computers was described in a Federal Trade Commission lawsuit filed this week against the company and three subsidiaries for alleged security failures that led to the three data breaches between April 2008 and January 2010. The failures caused "the export of hundreds of thousands of consumers' payment card account information to an Internet domain address registered in Russia" and millions of dollars in fraudulent charges on consumers' accounts, the FTC said.

Wyndham didn't mention the break-ins in its 2011 annual report or prior securities filings, according to an Associated Press review of the records.

Wyndham's 2011 annual report said the "hospitality industry is under increasing attack by cyber-criminals in the U.S. and other jurisdictions in which we operate" and noted that it was involved in "claims relating to information security and data privacy." Wyndham spent $13 million more on security improvements and expects to spend as much as $100 million in 2012 to guard against "the increasingly aggressive global threat from cyber-criminals," according to the report.

Wyndham said in an emailed statement to The Associated Press that it "fully complied with SEC regulations in regards to the disclosure of material events." In the statement, Wyndham said the incidents were "previously reported," an apparent reference to notices to consumers that were published on the company's website. The company also said the FTC's claims were without merit.

Network infrastructure company Verisign reported in late October, just a few weeks after the SEC issued the guidance, that there had been several successful cyberattacks against its corporate networks in 2010. In the filing, Verisign said the company's management had not been informed of the attacks until September 2011.

LinkedIn, the online networking service, publicly announced on June 12 the online theft of 6.5 million user passwords. It said the announcement complies with its obligations to the SEC, but it has yet to file a report about the incident with the commission.

The new SEC guidance puts pressure on companies to decide whether to disclose a breach or keep it secret, said Jody Westby of Global Cyber Risk, a consulting firm. But she said the demand for information amounts to locking the door after the house has been robbed.

"The SEC would have done better to require all public companies to say whether they've taken actions to implement a security program," Westby said.

Saving Money on Travel Expenses for Business ? Scott on MONEY

Most people don?t enjoy air travel as much as they used to. The many lines are long and stressful, as are the frequent delays caused by increased airport security screenings in the wake of 9/11. And getting searched is no treat, either. Then there is the actual flight to contend with, complete with less leg room as airlines attempt to cram as many seats as possible onto every plane in order to maximize revenue. Of course, there is also the cost to consider. Not only are ticket prices higher than ever, but you now get charged all kinds of fees for baggage, food, and anything else they can think to nickel and dime you for (some airlines even charge for carry-on bags now). Although you might not be able to get around the lines and the fact that your knees are practically pushed to your chest from the limited leg room, there are definitely ways that you can at least cut back on the cost of travel, which is a great relief when you find that you?re forced into it for business reasons.

One of the best ways to save money is by planning ahead. And while your line of business may require you to frequently hop on planes at the last minute, you should have some leeway with planned events like conferences, trade shows, and so on. By purchasing airline tickets and booking lodgings in advance you can bide your time in order to take advantage of sale weekends (like holidays) and you can receive notifications when prices drop to within set parameters. You?ll also have access to a plethora of available options, including those that are priced low, whereas travelers that wait until the last minute will nearly always find themselves paying a higher price because the cheaper fare has already been snapped up.

Another great way to save is to avoid as many fees as possible. Some (like TSA fees) are unavoidable, but if you can find ways to pack light and carry items on with you, you might be able to defer some of the luggage fees at the very least. Consider, for example, Scottevest. The jackets made by this company have pockets to house every gadget imaginable, and they often feature more than a dozen such pouches. You can store all of your electronics in your coat going through security (simply run it through the scanner without having to paw through your bag looking for mobile devices) and there are even clear, plastic panels that allow you to control the touchscreens on your tablet, MP3 player, or cell phone. Some also feature pockets large enough to house a change of clothes, including an extra pair of shoes. This is a great way to save some space in your luggage and get through security expediently.

When you travel for business you want to pay as little out-of-pocket as possible, even if your company will reimburse you for it. So you might have to do some checking to see if it?s more cost effective to park your car for a few days or hire car service to JFK airport, and you may need to frequent several travel sites in order to determine which can offer you the best price on airfare. But with a little legwork you?ll see that there are tons of ways to save on business travel. All you have to do is decide whether or not it?s worth trading your time for the money.

Tait Communications Supplies Radios To Victorian... | Stuff.co.nz

Christchurch-based Tait Communications has supplied 9000 cutting-edge digital portable and mobile radios to Victorian firefighters as part of a US$29 million ($37 million) project to improve emergency communications in the Australian state.

Bushfire-prone Victoria is protected by 1200 Country Fire Authority Brigades, sporting 56,000 members - one of the world's largest emergency service organisations.

The radios, designed and built by Tait, have been distributed to the brigades and form part of the upgrade of the statewide radio system which is being managed by the fire authority, Tait and its Australian partner AA Radio Services.

The 2010 contract was for Tait to introduce P25 digital radios to the service.

P25 is an international standard for digital two-way wireless communications.

The standard, which is also used by the New Zealand Police, allows for improved communications within and between agencies - especially emergency services.

The radios are more robust and can filter out background noise such as sirens, hoses and helicopters.

Tait Communications managing director Frank Owen said planned enhancements such as global positioning and ''crystal clear'' audio could be rolled out using the same handsets.

''This project underlines our expertise in designing and delivering critical communication solutions for? those operating in demanding environments and ensuring users are better able to protect both themselves and the public, and be more responsive and efficient.''

Country Fire Authority project director Doug Booth said the project had given firefighters better communications equipment into the hands of firefighters.

''From today, Tait's digital-capable radios will mean our fire brigades are connected like never before, taking CFA's field communications to a new and sophisticated level of operations.''

The radios would also mean the authority could work better with other emergency-response organisations as they make the move to digital networks, which would allow greater use of resources during large-scale events, he said.

Tait Communications, which is owned by a charitable trust, was founded by electronics pioneer the late Sir Angus Tait in 1969. It employs about 800 people globally.

Lego and Google Chrome teamup, want to cover Australasia in models and plastic bricks

Lego has allied itself with Google's Chrome browser, creating a web app that lets users craft their own houses, creatures and models, and then delicately place them across the whole of Australia and New Zealand. Celebrating 50 years of pre-teen Lego architecture in the Land Down Under, you can grab a plot of land from the source, start throwing some bricks together now and share your creations on the very public map and Google+. According to the Australia's Daily Telegraph, Lego Build hopes to roll out globally through Chrome later this year, but one continent should keep us busy until Google's I/O conference kicks off later this week.

Scientists twist light to send data: Beams of light can be twisted and combined to transmit data dramatically faster

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? A multi-national team led by USC with researchers hailing from the U.S., China, Pakistan and Israel has developed a system of transmitting data using twisted beams of light at ultra-high speeds -- up to 2.56 terabits per second.

To put that in perspective, broadband cable (which you probably used to download this) supports up to about 30 megabits per second. The twisted-light system transmits more than 85,000 times more data per second.

Their work might be used to build high-speed satellite communication links, short free-space terrestrial links, or potentially be adapted for use in the fiber optic cables that are used by some Internet service providers.

"You're able to do things with light that you can't do with electricity," said Alan Willner, electrical engineering professor at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering and the corresponding author of an article about the research that was published in Nature Photonics on June 24. "That's the beauty of light; it's a bunch of photons that can be manipulated in many different ways at very high speed."

Willner and his colleagues used beam-twisting "phase holograms" to manipulate eight beams of light so that each one twisted in a DNA-like helical shape as it propagated in free space. Each of the beams had its own individual twist and can be encoded with "1" and "0" data bits, making each an independent data stream -- much like separate channels on your radio.

Their demonstration transmitted the data over open space in a lab, attempting to simulate the sort of communications that might occur between satellites in space. Among the next steps for the research field will be to advance how it could be adapted for use in fiber optics, like those frequently used to transmit data over the Internet.

The team's work builds on research done by Leslie Allen, Anton Zeilinger, Miles Padgett and their colleagues at several European universities.

"We didn't invent the twisting of light, but we took the concept and ramped it up to a terabit-per-second," Willner said. His team included Jian Wang, Jeng-Yuan Yang, Irfan M. Fazal, Nisar Ahmed, Yan Yan, Hao Huang, Yongxiong Ren and Yang Yue from USC; Samuel Dolinar from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory; and Moshe Tur from Tel Aviv University.

Wang, the lead author, left USC after completing this research and is now a professor at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China.

This research was funded by the Defense Advance Research Projects Agency (DARPA) under the InPho (Information in a Photon) program.

The Day After Its $1.2B Purchase By Microsoft, Yammer Goes Down, And Up Again

Screen shot 2012-06-26 at 15.43.42Murphy's Law -- or some jaded users might just call it Yammer's law: One day after Yammer announced that it got bought by Microsoft for $1.2 billion, the enterprise social networking site has gone down. It's been down for at least an hour already and is covering several geographies, from what we can see. Update: it appears to be back up now. The crash will not do any favors to Microsoft, which plans to integrate the company into its Microsoft Office division to be part of a wider, integrated social and cloud push from the Redmond, Washington software giant.

Budgeting Tips For Students | Eric Finance

Budgeting Tips For StudentsUni life can be a lot of fun, but it can also be financially difficult when you do have too much fun. Some may be grappling with the new concept of paying rent, while others will probably be partying like there?s no tomorrow. To give you better control over your finances while you study, here are several budgeting tips.

Tip 1: Keep track of all your expenses

The important first step to budgeting is to keep track of all your expenses. You do this by recording everything you spend every month, either on a small notebook or any spreadsheet software, and keeping all your receipts so that you can see where your money goes. That way, you can make the necessary tweaks to your expenses and save funds. Having records of all your outlays are also handy for keeping track of your credit limit and reminding you not to overspend. Don?t forget to include receipts for utilities and bank statements, if any.

Tip 2: Avoid getting / using a credit card

Unless you really need to get one, avoid applying for a credit card. If you already have one, try not to use it too often because you might end up in deep debt. Sure, a credit card lets you establish your credit early, but if you?re new to the concept, stick to using cash. The risk of having one is even greater than any supposed early advantage it may bring. Get one when you?ve settled into uni life and when your finances have stabilised.

Tip 3: Put up your own business

Can you do something that you think other people would pay money for? It could be anything ? maybe you know how to assemble a computer, or have an eye for photography. Then think about putting up your own business, which would likely be more manageable time-wise than getting a job. You get to do something you enjoy, earn money and still have enough time to actually study in uni. Make sure you always surpass your customers? expectations so that you can charge extra after establishing a fairly-sized customer base. Who knows? Maybe this business might be so lucrative it would turn into a career.

Tip 4: Learn how to cook

Despite the rising costs of everything, including groceries, it?s still cheaper to prepare your own food than eat out, thus the need to learn how to cook. Even a cheap cafeteria at uni would take a heavier toll on the pocket than making your own sandwiches or preparing your own coffee. To save money on groceries, shop when your local supermarket runs a daily or weekly special; this could significantly reduce your grocery bill. In case you grow tired of your sandwiches, a cookbook can add depth to your repertoire. It might even be a new idea for a business (see tip 3).

Tip 5: Spend less than you earn

Here?s the best tip that we can ever give you?ever. Spend less than what you earn. This is the best way to amass wealth. If you spend more than you earn, what you amass is debt. If your income and expenses are roughly the same, your option is to either spend less or earn more. Guess which one is actually easier? Spending less, naturally, is easier than earning more because the latter requires that you get a second job, whereas the former is something that you can do immediately. All you have to do is stop spending.

Tip 6: Stay away from expensive habits

I need to clarify that bit about stopping spending: we still need to buy provisions and pay for utilities. What we need to do is reduce our wants, our expensive habits like liquor, cigarettes or video games. There?s nothing bad about an occasional Call of Duty session with friends or a couple of drinks during spring break. It?s the excess that hurts you and your finances.

Tip 7: Use public transport

Owning a car can be quite expensive, especially if it?s several years old already. Petrol, maintenance parking, insurance, registration and repairs cost a lot of money so unless you get paid to fix cars and know where to get free fuel, use public transportation. It?s cheaper and you?ll get plenty of exercise walking around.

GOP promises to rid nation of healthcare law

Republicans are using their weekly radio address to reiterate their promise to repeal President Obama?s healthcare law.

The address is timed for this week?s decision by the Supreme Court, which is set to announce its ruling on the controversial law as early as Monday.

The justices could uphold the law, they could throw it out, or they could throw out the mandate that consumers buy health insurance but leave the rest of the law standing.

Many expect the ruling to at least go against the mandate ? a survey of former Supreme Court clerks and attorneys who have argued before the court this week found 57 percent believe the mandate will be struck down.

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) this week reiterated his pledge that the whole law will be repealed by House Republicans if the High Court does not rule the law is unconstitutional. Rep. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) repeated that message in his address.

?Not only is President Obama?s health care law not working ? it makes things worse by driving up health care costs, making it harder for small businesses to hire workers,? Cassidy said. ?The only way to change this is by repealing ObamaCare entirely.

?So, unless the Court throws out the entire law, we should repeal what is left and implement common-sense, step-by-step reforms that protect Americans? access to the care they need, from the doctor they choose, at the lowest cost,? he said.

One difficult issue for Republicans is that if the court does just strike down the mandate, repealing the rest of the law would eliminate some provisions that are popular, such as a provision requiring insurers to allow parents to keep their children on their insurance through the age of 26. Cassidy handled this issue by stressing that Republicans ?would not repeat Democrats? mistakes.? He said the party would not rush through a law to replace the existing healthcare law, and that the party would instead stay focused on jobs and the economy.

Republicans have repeatedly used members of the House and Senate who, like Cassidy, are practicing physicians to make the case against the law.

?I have practiced medicine for nearly three decades primarily treating the uninsured ? I still see patients almost weekly,? Cassidy said. ?Good health care starts in a doctor?s office, not a Washington backroom.?

Cassidy said the cost of healthcare remains a significant problem, but offered no specific solutions in his address to deal with that problem. Instead, he said containing costs ?step-by-step? and not through expanding government is the ?right approach to healthcare reform.?

?Families should be able to make their own health care choices, visit the doctor of their choosing, and receive the health care they and their physician feel is best,? he said. ?That means implementing patient-centered solutions that lower costs and restore Americans? freedoms over their health care decisions.?

Chicago-Area Wounded Veteran and Family Surprised With New Mortgage-Free Home: Anonymous Donor Contributes More Than $200,000

Thanks to the kick-start of an anonymous donor, today a Chicago-area severely wounded U.S. military veteran and his family learned at a surprise announcement that they will move into a beautiful new mortgage-free LIFEhouse? home.

(PRWEB) June 24, 2012

Thanks to the kick-start of an anonymous donor, today a Chicago-area severely wounded U.S. military veteran and his family learned at a surprise announcement that they will move into a beautiful new mortgage-free LIFEhouse? home.

Built with award-winning universal design principles, the LIFEhouse accommodates the unique needs of a wounded veteran. The home is in the Newport Cove community, created by home builder/developer New American Homes near Antioch, Ill., on suburban Chicago?s Chain O? Lakes. The anonymous donor approached Susanne Tauke, owner of New American Homes, with more than $200,000 toward the home.

U.S. Army Spc. Nick Mapson is the recipient of the LIFEhouse. Mapson suffered debilitating injuries in Afghanistan in July 2004 and is the deserving recipient. He was driving a truck that was blown up by anti-tank mines. In the explosion?s aftermath, Mapson was trapped in the truck, became drenched in diesel fuel and caught on fire. He forced open a door to escape the burning truck, put out the fire that engulfed him, and without medication endured the wait for a helicopter pickup and subsequent hour-long ride to a hospital.

He was placed in a medically induced coma, stabilized and flown to Germany, where his parents were asked to come to say goodbye because of Mapson?s critical injuries. But he survived and was flown to Texas for medical treatment. The explosion and subsequent fire left him with third-degree burns to his face, arms and hands, much hearing loss, reduction in eyesight, back-disc bulging, herniation and other injuries.

Just as bravely as Mapson defended his country he has fought through his injuries, undergoing numerous skin grafts and continuing rehabilitation during months in hospitals. He experiences constant pain, especially in his hands, which lack a range of motion. He earned a Purple Heart and other U.S. commendations for his meritorious service. Mapson is one of the more than 48,000 U.S. veterans who have been wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Mapson and his wife and two children presently live in Sugar Grove, Ill.

Built for a wounded veteran?s needs

The ranch-style LIFEhouse, at 1,992 square feet plus a finished basement, features an open floor plan with wide doorways and circulation areas. The specially designed entrances, kitchen and bathrooms are accessible for a physically challenged veteran.

Among the features adding to livability are multi-level cabinetry, lever door handles, stair handrails with lighting beneath, alternating colored low-pile carpet on stairs, hardwood flooring, no-slip porcelain tile, accessible light switches and outlets, and appliances accessible from a sitting level. The home incorporates predominantly made-in-America products, such as easy-maintenance engineered wood siding. Wausau Supply, one of the Midwest?s largest building supply companies, is donating the siding?s prefinishing, which is advertised to have a virtually maintenance-free finish and a 30-year no-fade warranty.

The LIFEhouse team

The site of the LIFEhouse announcement was The Highlands of Elgin, in Elgin, Ill., at the annual golf event of the Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago (HBAGC) and Residential Construction Employers Council, Chicago.

This home is part of the national Touchdown for Homes project and locally involves the HBAGC, the Chicago NFL Players Association (NFLPA) Former Players Chapter (of which Reggie Smith is president) and New American Homes.

Susanne Tauke, president of New American Homes Inc., said, ?LIFEhouse began when our company collaborated with the Center for Inclusive Design and Environmental Access (IDEA) at the University of Buffalo, State University of New York, which is a pioneer in architecture and design work in accessibility. Our first LIFEhouse won the 2012 Best of 50-Plus Housing Award from the National Association of Home Builders. This led to the anonymous donor providing the seed money to build the LIFEhouse for a Hero.

?The anonymous donor was overwhelmed with emotion after reading Nick Mapson?s story. The donor chose Nick for the LIFEhouse, and like everyone associated with this effort is extremely grateful for his sacrifices.?

Tauke will meet with Mapson to determine if the LIFEhouse can be customized even more to serve his needs.

Mapson, in his application for the LIFEhouse, wrote, ?Life would be a lot easier with handles and grips to hold onto, and the user-friendly equipment would greatly help as well. Just being able to have a sense of security to give my family would mean the world to me. I am very grateful to have organizations like yours available for us severely wounded veterans. It truly means the world to us.?

Rita Unzner, executive director of HBAGC, learned of Mapson with help from the Veterans Administration. Also aiding in selecting Mapson was Operation Finally Home (OFH), a national 501(c)(3) that provides custom mortgage-free homes to wounded and disabled veterans and the widows of the fallen. Many manufacturers have contributed to the LIFEhouse. LP? Building Products, which helps wounded veterans around the country, has provided organizational support and donated LP SmartSide? engineered wood siding and trim.

Tauke said, ?We are so grateful to the companies who are donating great easy-maintenance products for the home ? companies like LP Building Products and Wausau Supply.?

Smith said, ?It?s a privilege for the NFLPA to support Nick and his family with the LIFEhouse. We have been delighted to participate in this effort, helping bring attention to the needs of wounded veterans and to create visibility about the LIFEhouse. Former NFL players are devoted to giving back in the communities that have supported us. We honor the great sacrifices of our wounded veterans.?

Unzner said, ?It?s a unique honor to benefit Nick and his family. HBAGC members, many of whom are U.S. veterans, are indebted to veterans for their sacrifices and are very pleased to support Touchdown for Homes. We plan to continue to reach out to Nick after he gets settled in his new home to help with the transition to his new community.?

Paul Sowacke, Chicago-based channel manager for LP Building Products, said, "LP Building Products recognizes the tremendous commitment our veterans make to keep us free. Nick perfectly exemplifies this commitment and sacrifice. We hope Nick and his family enjoy the LP SmartSide Trim and Siding for its beauty and durability."

Newport Cove is an award-winning planned community of 67 homes located on 42 waterfront acres along Bluff Lake, one of 15 lakes in the Chain O? Lakes. Forty percent of the community is dedicated open space, including an eight-acre waterfront park and 100-plus-slip marina.

piquant prose: writing about food: Beverages

I post a lot of food recipes on here, but rarely do I post about what I drink.

In our household, we consume four main beverages: water, tea, coffee and milk.

Both of us drink plenty of water, and get even more through the copious amounts of fruits and vegetables we eat. We drink almost exclusively water with lunch and dinner, usually at least 12 ounces each. In addition, I drink water throughout the day--I keep waterbottles filled around the house for easy sipping.

I'm also a regular tea drinker, and drink most of the tea in the household. My favorite brands include Celestial and Stash teas. I'm partial to Chai tea, peppermint, green tea/mint combos, and sleepytime. I've also been known to drink English breakfast tea and Good Earth original. I drink all of my tea unsweetened and only put milk into chai tea.

?

During the summer months, I drink less tea--I'm not a big fan of iced tea, and 80 degree weather and hot tea don't really jive.

Both of us drink coffee, although Dan drinks much more. (His work supplies free Peet's coffee!) I regularly am gifted either free drink cards at Peet's or Starbucks gift cards that cover a substantial portion of our coffee expenses. We also have free coffee in our apartment building. We try to limit our purchases of coffee (especially the fancy drinks) to dates and special treats.

Finally--milk. Growing up, I pretty much didn't drink milk--a few too many experiences with sour milk, and a general dislike of the stuff meant it was not a regular household purchase. A few years ago, I sought to cure my milk aversion by trying the good stuff: Strauss milk. Local, organic, non-homogenized, glass bottle, grass fed, delicious milk. It worked!

We've since transition to slightly less expensive homogenized carton milk, but we still insist on drinking local, organic and not ultra-pasteurized milk. We're not snooty: it just tastes that much better. It's a bonus that's it's better for us, the cows and the environment.

Most of my milk is consumed on cold cereal, or in combination with chocolate: chocolate milk or hot cocoa. Very rarely do I drink a glass of the cold stuff. Still, I usually manage to sneak in at least one glass daily. We go through at least a gallon of milk per week.

What don't we drink? Juices, sodas, and alcohol! It is a very rare occasion indeed that we drink either juice or soda. The former we consume in its raw form--fruit! The latter? It's just not something we think has a place in our diets.

As for alcohol, neither Dan nor I has a particular taste for liquor, and we drink it only on rare occasions, in incredibly sweetened drinks.

What do you drink during the day? Water? Soda? Juice? Do you drink differently on weekends and weekdays?

Let me know what you think by leaving a comment or emailing me at piquantprose [at] gmail [dot] com.

(AP) ? Paraguayan lawmakers voted to impeach President Fernando Lugo for his role in a deadly clash involving landless farmers and announced that former Roman Catholic bishop's impeachment trial would begin on Friday in the Senate.

Lugo, who was elected four years ago on promises that he would help the South American country's poor, went on national television to dismiss rumors that he would resign and vowed to face the trial "with all its consequences."

The lower house approved the impeachment trial by a vote of 76-1 on Thursday and hours later the Senate announced that it will begin his impeachment trial on Friday.

The vote added to the political turmoil in the poor, landlocked country with a history of political instability and prompted frightened residents of the capital, Asuncion, to shutter businesses and pull children from school.

Paraguayans were unnerved by the looming showdown in the opposition-controlled Senate and the possibility that it could spark street protests such as those that followed the March 1999 assassination of Vice President Luis Maria Argana.

"I'm working in the street and truth is I'm really scared! Upset," a Twitter user named Pamela Veron wrote on her account.

"And the new Interior Minister, what does he say about our security?" a Paraguayan man named Juan Fleytas tweeted. "He guarantees that nothing will happen to us if we protest?"

Hospitals in Asuncion were put on alert, freeing up beds, suspending scheduled surgeries and ensuring plenty of medical staff were on standby as a preventive measure in the face of possible violence, said Enrique Bellassai, director of the Medical Emergencies Hospital in Asuncion.

"We are not going to escape turbulence, it's coming," said Paraguayan political analyst Horacio Galeano Perrone, who specializes in national defense issues. "If you were to ask me, I'd tell you to go to the supermarket and buy batteries, buy everything."

Lugo's election in 2008 ended 61 years of rule by the Colorado Party, and he has constantly clashed with Congress, where he has few firm allies. If ousted, Lugo would be replaced by Vice President Federico Franco.

Critics blame Lugo for the violence that erupted last week when police tried to evict about 150 farmers from the 4,900-acre (2,000)-hectare reserve, which is part of a huge estate owned by a Colorado Party politician. Advocates for the farmers say the landowner used political influence to get the land from the state decades ago, and say it should have been put it to use for land reform.

Seventeen people died in the clash.

Lugo, 63, has expressed sorrow at the confrontation and accepted the resignations of his interior minister and his chief of police.

Paraguay is the world's No. 4 supplier of soybeans and land disputes have risen in recent years as farmers seek more land to grow the crop, which is the country's top export earner.

Lugo, who resigned as a bishop to run for the presidency, had promised farmland for 87,000 landless families. But as he nears the end of his term next year, he has failed to deliver, partly because his programs have been blocked in the legislature.

The president was once known as the "bishop of the poor," and his election was part of South America's leftward swing.

Lugo is still backed by some farmworker groups, including several whose leaders said they wanted to travel to the capital to demonstrate their support.

On the streets of the Paraguayan capital, opinions about the impeachment effort were mixed.

"Lugo should finish his mandate and afterward we will elect someone who belongs to us," said Benito Canete, a 68-year-old concierge in an apartment building. "I think that if they get rid of him now it will be bad for the country."

Ana Campuzano, a 42-year-old odontologist, backed the ouster effort. "Lugo should resign, it was bad for him to remain" after the deadly clash, she said. "It's his fault because he doesn't know how to manage things."

On Thursday, Lugo urged lawmakers to do all they can to avoid an impeachment trial, warning that it could be resisted by many citizens who back him and that it could put them on the wrong side of history.

Paraguay's land ownership problems stretch back nearly 140 years to a war Paraguay lost to Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. Saddled with crushing war debt, Paraguay began selling off government holdings that amounted to 95 percent of the country, with the most fertile parcels going to political cronies.

Privatizations accelerated under the 1954-1989 dictatorship of Alfredo Stroessner and into the early 1990s, when about 17 million acres (7 million hectares) ended up in the hands of just 1,877 people, according to a 2004 government study.

In 1999, the assassination of Argana deepened a political clash and led to demonstrations calling for President Raul Cubas Grau of the Colorado Party to be tried for Argana's killing. Seven demonstrators were killed in a confrontation with government forces, leading to Cubas' resignation.
