Eric Church Forgot His Lyrics!

ec

Eric Church has never had a problem remembering the lyrics to his songs,? especially since he writes all his music, so you can imagine his shock when he went blank during? a recent televised appearance on the Grand Ole Opry.? What is even worse is that it was the lyrics to his biggest hits "Drink In My Hand" and "Springsteen."

Eric tells the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, "You get on the frigging Opry on television and you forget the only two number ones that you have."

Lucky for Eric, the Opry wasn't broadcasting live that night, so he had a second shot to get the lyrics right on the later show.? The Opry producers gave him a little help too.

"I didn't even know the Grand Ole Opry had a teleprompter," Eric says.? "I just started 'Drink in My Hand' and all of a sudden the words to the song appear in the back of the theater.? I about lost it again because it was so funny."

I would think that would be one of the worst fears of an artist, forgetting the lyrics is bad but to do it at the Opry...oh the horror.? Good thing Eric could laugh it off, we all ARE only human aren't we.

Unprecedented 'black mold' meningitis a challenge

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The black mold creeping into the spines of hundreds of people who got tainted shots for back pain marks uncharted medical territory.

Never before has this particular fungus been found to cause meningitis. It's incredibly hard to diagnose, and to kill ? requiring at least three months of a treatment that can cause hallucinations. There's no good way to predict survival, or when it's safe to stop treating, or exactly how to monitor those who fear the fungus may be festering silently in their bodies.

"I don't think there is a precedent for this kind of thing," said Dr. Arjun Srinivasan of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Health officials and doctors have tracked down most of the 14,000 people potentially at risk for fungal meningitis, blamed for the deaths of 24 people and sickening more than 300.

"This is definitely new territory for us," he said.

The fungus' brown-black color signals an armor that ? along with being injected near the spine ?helped this mold sneak past the immune defenses of otherwise healthy people, said Dr. Arturo Casadevall, a fungal disease specialist at New York's Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

"What we're dealing with here is fundamentally different" from a typical fungal infection, he said. "This is a bug that most of us don't know much about."

But they're learning fast, piecing together clues that promise some hope.

Doctors are beginning to detail in medical journals the first deaths in this outbreak, and the grim autopsy findings make clear that treating early is crucial, before the fungus becomes entrenched. In one case, a woman died in Maryland after the fungus pierced blood vessels in her brain, leading to severe damage.

People getting treated earlier "seem to be doing OK," with fewer of the strokes that characterized the outbreak's beginning, said Dr. Carol Kauffman of the University of Michigan. She has advised the CDC and co-authored advice in the New England Journal of Medicine on how to handle the complex medication used in treatment.

People who got contaminated steroid shots made by a Massachusetts pharmacy have been told to be on guard for months for meningitis symptoms. But the CDC said Wednesday that the biggest risk for getting sick seems to be within 42 days of receiving one of the implicated back injections.

With the tainted shots recalled in late September, that means the period of greatest risk is nearing an end. And it should help doctors bombarded with calls from the worried determine who most needs a spinal tap to look for the very earliest signs of infection. Still, public health officials recall a 2002 meningitis cluster linked to steroid injections contaminated with a different fungus; one of those victims got sick 152 days after the shot.

Fungal infections don't get a lot of attention, but they afflict millions around the world, said David Perlin of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, who is studying better ways to diagnose them. Most are skin infections like athlete's foot, but fungi also can cause pneumonia, sinusitis and other problems.

Serious infections tend to strike people with immune systems weakened because of cancer, AIDS or other problems. Fungus-caused meningitis in particular is extremely rare? especially in otherwise healthy people like in this outbreak ? and it's "very bad news," said Michigan's Kauffman.

While the more common bacterial and viral forms of meningitis tend to strike quickly with obvious symptoms, fungal meningitis grows very slowly and is hard to diagnose. Few antifungal drugs are absorbed into the central nervous system, limiting treatment options. Plus, human cells and fungal cells have a lot of similarities, making it hard to attack the fungus without side effects, Kauffman explained.

The main culprit in this outbreak is a black mold called Exserohilum rostratum, common in dirt and grasses. Only 33 human infections previously had been reported, mostly eye or skin infections in people with weak immune systems, Casadevall said.

Here's how scientists think it's sneaking into the well-guarded spinal cord and brain of a healthy person:

?The steroid injected near the spine reduces inflammation, one of the immune system's defenses against contamination.

?The mold grows quietly until enough accumulates for it to burrow a tiny hole, or abscess, into the lining of the spinal canal, said Dr. William Schaffner of Vanderbilt University. Reaching the spinal fluid inside offers a direct pathway to the brain.

?The fungus' color signals how intractable it is. Brown-black molds produce melanin, the same chemical that helps human skin tan. It guards against the sun's mold-killing ultraviolet rays ? and inside people, it fends off both antifungal drugs and other immune-system attacks, Casadevall said.

The good news: Black mold is treatable with a drug named voriconazole, with far fewer side effects than the older treatment initially recommended when the outbreak began.

Still, Kauffman cautioned doctors to carefully monitor patients because differences in metabolism can make levels surge in the bloodstream, causing hallucinations, confusion, nausea and occasionally liver damage. On the flip side, their bodies may process the drug too quickly to battle the fungus. Plus, voriconazole can interact badly with a list of other common medications.

"It's not clear" how long to treat but at least three months is advised, Kauffman said. It begins with intravenous infusions that are hard to administer outside of a hospital. Then once the patient is stable enough, pills can be used.

Jessica Biel & Justin Timberlake?s Wedding Photos Have Been Released

Money Well Spent?

Posted by: Trent on |

Yesterday we learned that People magazine won the rights to publish Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake?s wedding photos here in the US (while OK! magazine won the rights to publish in Europe) by shelling out a reported sum of $300,000. to the couple for the photos. Today, we get our FIRST LOOK at Justica?s wedding photos which will appear in this week?s NEW issue of People magazine. As you can see below, Justin and Jessica had a lot of fun posing for their wedding photos ? click below and check it out.

Judging by their wedding photo, Justin Timberlake was more than ready to jump into his new life with Jessica Biel, springing airborne with joy. When the couple of five years exchanged personal vows in a romantic Italian ceremony Oct. 19, ?it was a really special evening,? Timberlake, 31, tells PEOPLE in this week?s cover story, in which the newlyweds open up for the first time about their special day and share exclusive photos. ?It was a total fantasy experience,? adds Biel, 30. One cause for emotion? The singer-actor played the guitar and serenaded his beautiful bride-to-be as she walked down the aisle in a custom, petal pink Giambattista Valli Haute Couture gown. ?It was an original piece I wrote specifically for the evening and for her,? says Timberlake, who wore a Tom Ford tux he helped design. The pair welcomed 100 guests, including close friends Jimmy Fallon, Andy Samberg, Timbaland and Biel?s 7th Heaven costar Beverley Mitchell, to the Borgo Egnazia resort in southern Italy for a week-long wedding celebration. ?It was a lot to ask of them to travel, so we figured we?d give our guests a good party!? says Timberlake.

Naturally, the full set of wedding photos and all the deets from the wedding will be featured in the new issue of People magazine so you might want to get out there and snap up a copy. I think it?s really very cute that JT composed and performed a song for Jessica especially for their wedding day ? that?s romance, y?all. To be honest, while I personally found this Justica wedding to be kind of ho-hum, I must admit that after seeing this first wedding photo, I?m very curious to see the rest of the photos inside the new issue of People. I think it?s a bit sneaky and brilliant that the People editors figured out a way to feature a photo of Britney Spears on the cover of Justin Timberlake?s wedding issue (the ONLY 3 people on the cover are Justin, Jessica ? and BRITNEY) ? well done, editors. What do y?all think of this first look at the Justica wedding photos? Are you curious to see more? Will you be picking up this issue of People magazine?

Google Talks Holiday Shopping Trends Businesses Need To Be ...

Consumers intend to spend more on holiday shopping this year than they did last year, according to new research from Google.

Do you expect to see better holiday sales than last year? Let us know in the comments.

?We expect this to be the first Nonline shopping season,? a Google spokesperson tells WebProNews. ?Meaning that the line between offline and online shopping has truly become blurred for users. They don?t see a line between their online and offline experiences, and neither do smart retailers.?

To perform its study, Google commissioned Ipsos OTX, and independent market research firm. Interviews were conducted via online survey from 8/29 ? 8/27, with a total sample of 1,500 consumers.

?Not only is this the first Nonline holiday season, but it?s an important one for retailers as consumers prepare to spend more money ? and spend more time making sure they get the most value for every dollar spent,? says Google Retail Industry Director, Todd Pollak. ?Our research released today with Ipsos shows that on average, shoppers plan to spend $900 on holiday shopping this year, up slightly from an average of $854 last year. Along with this bump in spending, we?re seeing an increase in research before purchasing by shoppers who are more judicious about their purchases- 46% plan to spend more time shopping around for gifts this year.?

?We found that 80% of shoppers will research online before making a purchase this season, and they switch devices to suit their needs,? he adds. ?For example, 51% of shoppers will research online and then visit the store to purchase, while 17% will visit a store first and then purchase online. Another 32% will research online, visit store to view a product, then return online to purchase. In short, the shopper?s journey looks less like a funnel and more like a flight map, and the lines between online and offline shopping experiences are blurring.?

Nonline shopping

According to the company?s research, consumers are most excited about purchasing clothes, TVs, laptops and tablets (namely, iPads, though tablets in general aren?t too far behind), though they intend to shop across all major retail categories, of course. 83% intend to purchase apparel, 64% intend to purchase toys, 57% intend to purchase electronics, 56% intend to purchase watches & jewelry, 49% intend to purchase cosmetics/beauty products, and 35% intend to purchase sporting goods.

Here?s what tablet and e-reader purchase intent looks like:

Tablets and eReaders

Interestingly, latptop intent is still greater than tablet intent (though not by much).

Google says its key takeaways from the study are:

  • Capture Consumer Demand: 54% of consumers will start holiday shopping before Black Friday
  • Make Sure Your Brand is Top of Mind: 46% of consumers plan to spend more time shopping around for gifts this year because of the economy
  • Open Attribution Window: While consumers are researching early, 31% plan to do the majority of their holiday shopping in early/mid December
  • Capture undecided holiday shoppers with search: 37% of consumers say search is their go-to source for gift ideas, and 51% plan to research online but buy in-store
  • Implement full coverage for mobile and tablet: 4 in 5 mobile/tablet owners will use their device for holiday shopping, and mobile users continue searching after Christmas
Starting Holiday Shopping

We had a discussion with Director of Product Management for Google Shopping, Vineet Buch, who talked about how people are using their mobile devices in physical stores more and more. Depending on the kind of store or product, he says, people rely on humans for expertise and information, but in these types of scenarios, mobile apps can give a lot more info about a product than a human. He gave the examples of shopping for a washing machine or a microwave.

In cases where customers are more likely to make a taste-based purchase, Buch says mobile apps can empower the sales clerks to provide higher quality services. As far as straight information goes, however, we can probably expect consumers to turn to their mobile devices in-store before turning to sales clerks in increasing numbers.

According to Google?s findings, 85% of people shop for a gift on one device and then make their purchase on another. To do so, Google says, 45% will leave an item in the virtual shopping cart, 45% will send themselves an email or link, and 32% will conduct a new search on a new device.

?Savvy retailers are stimulating demand on one device and completing a sale on another,? says Pollak. ?Shopping searches spike on mobile devices on days when people are on the go ? out at a Thanksgiving dinner or hunting bargains at the mall. The biggest days for holiday shopping searches on mobile devices last year were Thanksgiving, Black Friday, the day after Christmas, and the weekends in December.?

Shopping Companions

According to Google, 62% of shoppers used a smartphone in a store to help with shopping research last year, indicating that retailers should aim to inform in-store purchase decisions with mobile apps or sites that are optimized for mobile.

Buch says that, as far as online goes, video is becoming increasingly powerful in many categories, as far as discovery. For reviews, he says, videos are better than words, because you can see the angles of products, how the move, etc.

?The user is becoming better informed and smarter,? he says, adding that this is an opportunity for those retailers who can better connect with users.

Mobile, he says, is another big opportunity, not just because you can drive conversions, but so many people come to retailers through mobile. The key is not to have a disconnect between your mobile experience and your desktop web experience as a retailer. Consumers should get a familiar experience no matter what screen they?re on.

?Mobile is kind of like the early days of the desktop Internet in some sense,? Buch says. ?Tons of traffic, relatively easy to understand but not so may people savvy enough to leverage it properly.?

Users, he says, are demanding reliability and performance, and that needs to be reflected no matter what screen they?re using to access your site.

?The same way Google tries to have a seamless experience, merchants who are able to make that happen will do much better than those who have a disconnect,? he says.

Price has historically been a major driver of purchases online, he says, but having faith in the experience is becoming really important as well, he says, noting that stores with Google?s Trusted Stores badge get mich higher clickthroughs than stores without.

Much has been made about the importance of social to shopping, and Buch shared some thoughts on that as well. ?People have gone back and forth,? he says. ?People were putting products into news feeds or their Google+ feeds?that?s not the way social shopping is panning out.?

?It?s not so much about your personal friends, as opinions you trust,? he says. ?Even if they?re not personal acquaintances of yours.?

In other words, you don?t necessarily need your actual friends on Google+ to gain social shopping value from the Google+ community. If you Circle people whose opinions matter to you, it?s possible that these opinions will come out as needed. Google, of course, is already adding Google+ associations to search results, and continues to find new integrations of these social connections all the time.

?It used to be that shoppers and merchants formed connections offline ? a salesperson could spark a conversation with a shopper in the store,? says Pollak. ?Now these connections are happening both online and offline. With YouTube and social networks, people are sharing their opinion on products not just with a group of friends, but with millions of people. Retailers are advertising against terms like ?reviews? and ?haul videos? to promote their message. And for good reason ? we found that 13% of shoppers plan to watch online videos to help with shopping research, and 48% will use tablets to read product reviews before purchasing.?

Is your business ready for the mad holiday season rush? How important is the mobile shopping experience to your customers? Share your thoughts in the comments.

College Student Becomes Body Image Hero with Underwear Photo

In the News

Posted on October 23, 2012 - 02:58:18 by

A New York college student who started a blog on self-acceptance in order to help other young women deal with body image issues has become a viral hero ? and not just because she?s trying to boost the self-esteem of others.?

?

Stella Boonshoft, who writes The Body Love Blog and who has polycystic ovarian syndrome, put her curves on full display when she posted a photo of herself in her underwear on her Tumblr site. And here?s the best part:

?

She wrote, "My body must be a revolution," along with the photo.? She captioned it, "Picture might be considered obscene because subject is not thin. And we all know that only skinny people can show their stomachs and celebrate themselves. I am not going to stand for that. This is my body, not yours. MINE." BRAVO STELLA!?

?

"I think people are cruel because they are uncomfortable seeing an image of people who are not thin," said Boonshoft on the Today show. "I found that after so many years of struggling with my body image that really there was no way to justify the bullying as a child and as a teen."

?

Brandon Stanton, who appeared with Boonshoft on the Today, created the Humans of New York project, a collection of street portraits in the city. He initially took his own picture of Boonshoft clothed but later made a decision to use Boonshoft?s underwear shot, which she says mortified her at first.

?

"It took a lot of years of soul searching to decide this isn't right, and I finally came to a place where I was really happy with the way that I looked."

?

"I wanted to leave a message to the bullies who tormented me."

Her post has since become a cyberspace hit with more than 2.4 million views on Facebook.? Plus, more than 80,000 people shared her photo from her Tumblr page.

It?s tough being a teenager today ? the bullying, the misuse of technology, the pressure to be thin. I can only wish that my own daughter will have enough courage to embrace her body and to stand up to others who criticize her, no matter what she looks like, the way that Stella Boonshoft has done.

Global stocks, euro tumble on lackluster earnings, Spain

reported disappointing profits and earnings outlooks.

The euro fell as low as $1.2950, its lowest level against the dollar since October 16. It last traded at $1.2964, down 0.7 percent on the day. The euro also dropped against the yen as Spain's borrowing costs spiked after rating agency Moody's downgraded five of the country's regions, including economically important but deeply indebted Catalonia.

The decline in U.S. stock prices was broad with all 10 of the S&P 500's sectors down. Dupont shares fell 9.1 percent to $45.23 after the chemical maker slashed its earnings forecast and reported disappointing quarterly results.

"The market has gone from taking a macro view focused on the EU and China to focusing on earnings, and the earnings are disappointing," said Timothy Hoyle, director of research for Haverford Investments in Radnor, Pennsylvania.

"We expected earnings to be flat to down a few percent, but we did not anticipate the fact that the third quarter got progressively weaker for many companies."

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 208.46 points, or 1.56 percent, at 13,137.43. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 16.29 points, or 1.14 percent, at 1,417.53. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 15.72 points, or 0.52 percent, at 3,001.24.

Apple Inc took the wraps off an 8-inch tablet on Tuesday in its biggest product move since debuting the iPad two years ago. Its 7.9-inch "iPad mini" marks Apple's first foray into the smaller tablet segment. Apple's shares were down 2.3 percent at $619.50 in a day of very volatile trade.

Global shares were down 1.4 percent.

In Europe, the FTSEurofirst 300 index ended down 1.7 percent at 1,088.71, its lowest close since September 5.

The euro zone's blue-chip Euro STOXX 50 index fell 2.1 percent to 2,477.92 points, while the Euro STOXX 50 implied volatility index rose 10 percent, highlighting investors' concerns over the market outlook.

Tuesday was the worst day for euro zone stocks and the biggest rise for implied volatility since September 26, when violent anti-austerity protests hit Spain and Greece.

On Wall Street, the Dow and the S&P 500 indexes have given up all of their gains since the European Central Bank's Sept 6. announcement of a plan to buy bonds of troubled euro zone nations.

The S&P 500 was below its 50-day moving average of about 1,434, which had been a level of support and may now act as resistance if the market is able to rebound.

U.S. EARNINGS DISAPPOINT

A total of 145 of the S&P 500 companies have reported results so far. Sixty-three percent have missed analysts' expectations for revenue. By contrast, since 1994 an average of 62 percent of companies have exceeded estimates. Over the past four quarters 55 percent of companies have beaten.

Overall earnings for S&P 500 stock index companies are expected to fall 2.5 percent in the third quarter from a year ago.

On Tuesday, 33 S&P 500 companies are due to report earnings, including Netflix and Harley-Davidson . Facebook Inc is also scheduled to report after the bell.

SPAIN'S ECONOMY CONTRACTS AGAIN

In other European news, the Spanish economy, the fourth largest in the euro zone, contracted in the third quarter. according to the country's central bank.

The euro plunged versus the yen and hit a one-week low versus the dollar.

Financial markets are still waiting for a fiscal bailout request from Spain to trigger the European Central Bank's new bond-buying program, which many believe would draw a line under any threat of default from the euro zone's fourth-largest economy.

Yves Mersch, who has been nominated to serve on the ECB's Executive Board, told an audience in Berlin that while there was no limit to the amount of bonds the ECB could buy, there was a time limit.

Shortly before he spoke, Spain sold short-term debt, with yields rising slightly on three-month paper and falling on six-month paper.

Meanwhile, data showed business morale in France's manufacturing sector slumped to its lowest in over two years.

The data fueled fears that France, the euro zone's second-largest economy, may be on the brink of a recession, according to Joe Manimbo, senior market analyst, Western Union Business Solutions in Washington D.C.

"But despite the latest flare-up in worries about debt and growth in the euro region, the single currency may see its downside somewhat cushioned by expectations Spain may be weeks away from requesting an international bailout, allowing the country to tap the ECB's bond buying program to bring meaningful debt relief," he said.

BERNANKE ERA MAY BE CLOSING

In the United State, the Federal Reserve's policy committee began a two-day meeting on Tuesday.

The Federal Open Market Committee is likely to hold off from taking fresh steps at the meeting, opting to review the impact of the significant action it took last month and keep a low profile in its last gathering before the November 6 elections.

The New York Times reported Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke has told close friends he probably will not stand for a third term at the U.S. central bank even if President Barack Obama wins the November 6 election.

Oil prices fell as commodity and equity prices were pressured by concerns about slowing global economic growth. Brent crude for December delivery fell $1.09 to $108.36 per barrel. U.S. December crude settled down $1.98, or 2.23 percent, at $86.67 a barrel.

The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note was up 14/32 in price, with the yield at 1.7642 percent.

Leukemia walk draws hundreds to Northampton ... - Cancer Kick

Light up nightLighted balloons were held high in honor of survivors, supporters, and those who perished tonight at the light up the night walk at Northampton Community College in Bethlehem Township.

Karl Musselman carried a gold balloon. His father died of leukemia 25 years ago.

Joni Buchert carried two. White because she beat cancer 14 years ago, and gold because her sister, Ginny, lost her fight with bone marrow cancer eight years ago.

?I walk for a cure,? she said.

Hundreds of Lehigh Valley residents with similar stories today circled the Northampton Community College campus in Bethlehem Township for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society?s Light The Night Walk.

Walkers carried gold balloons in memory of loved ones who died of cancer. Cancer survivors carried white and supporters red. The balloons, each containing a plastic light bulb, glowed as they bounced around the campus.

The walk last year raised $262,000 for the Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter. This year?s goal is $298,000.

?Light The Night Walk gives hope to patients and their families and lets them know that they are not alone in their battle against cancer,? said Maida R. Milone, the executive director of the Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter. ?It is a night to pay tribute to lives touched by cancer, honor those we have lost, and celebrate the lives that have been saved.?

Jasmine Rodriguez, of Allentown, walked with her close friends and family members. Rodriguez lost her daughter, Jamayra, nearly eight years ago to leukemia. She was 14.

?Jamayra fought hard all her life,? said Rodriguez. ?With all of the lifesaving research that LLS has funded, the life expectancy of children diagnosed with leukemia has increased significantly. Our son is proof of that.?

Rodriquez?s son, Willie, was also diagnosed with leukemia. He was 23 months old at the time of the diagnosis. He battled the blood cancer off-and-on and finally received a bone marrow transplant five years ago when he was 13 years old. He is now in remission.

Bernanke defends Fed stimulus as China, Brazil raise concerns

TOKYO (Reuters) - Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said on Sunday it was far from clear that the U.S. central bank's highly stimulative monetary policy hurts emerging economies, defending a policy raising concerns in China, Russia and Brazil.

Bernanke has often defended Fed actions against domestic critics, who argue the policy of keeping interest rates near zero while ramping up asset purchases hurts savers and risks future inflation.

But in a speech in Tokyo, Bernanke addressed critics abroad saying stronger growth in the United States bolsters global prospects as well, countering the likes of Brazil's Finance Minister Guido Mantega who has labeled the Fed's latest stimulus effort "selfish".

Critics say the Fed's unorthodox policies weaken the U.S. dollar and boost the currencies of developing countries, hurting their ability to export.

"It is not at all clear that accommodative policies in advanced economies impose net costs on emerging market economies," Bernanke said at an event sponsored by the Bank of Japan and the International Monetary Fund. While the speech was delivered in private, the Fed provided a text to the media.

The Fed last month announced a new program of open-ended bond purchases that will be continued until there is substantial improvement in labor market conditions, barring a sustained and unexpected spike in inflation. To start off, the central bank will buy $40 billion in mortgage-backed securities per month.

"This policy not only helps strengthen the U.S. economic recovery, but by boosting U.S. spending and growth, it has the effect of helping support the global economy as well," Bernanke said.

FRIEND OR FOE

In 2010, when the Fed launched its second round of monetary policy stimulus, known as quantitative easing, many finance ministers around the world accused the United States of pursuing a beggar-thy-neighbour policy.

Criticism of the current round of bond purchases, known as QE3, has been more muted, but nonetheless evident.

Mantega told the IMF's 188 member countries in Tokyo on Friday that the policy was "selfish" and harming emerging markets both by stealing their share of exports and by spurring destabilizing capital flows and currency movements.

"Advanced countries cannot count on exporting their way out of the crisis at the expense of emerging market economies," he told the IMF's governing panel. "Brazil, for one, will take whatever measures it deems necessary to avoid the detrimental effects of these spillovers."

In opening remarks at the conference that Bernanke addressed on Sunday, IMF chief Christine Lagarde said aggressive steps by the Fed, the European Central Bank and the Bank of Japan were "big policy actions in the right direction."

But she took note of the distress those policies were causing elsewhere and called for central banks to step-up their dialogue and cooperation.

"Accommodative monetary policies in many advanced economies are likely to entail large and volatile capital flows to emerging economies," she said. "This could ... lead to (economic) overheating, asset price bubbles and the buildup of financial imbalances."

Critics of the Fed's policy, both foreign and domestic, contend it is likely to do little to help the U.S. economy, while risking unwanted inflation.

Central banks "should consider draining excessive liquidity injected into the market and eliminate inflationary pressure in the long-term," People's Bank of China Governor Zhou Xiaochuan was quoted as saying by the official state news agency Xinhua, which cited the Journal of Public Research, a PBOC magazine.

Russia is also worried.

"Everything is getting done, from my perspective, blindly, without regard to the consequences it could have," Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov told reporters in Tokyo on Saturday. "For now, this excess liquidity is not contributing to inflation, but it could happen at some point ... and it could be a very serious situation."

"NO PANACEA"

For his part, Bernanke stressed that inflation in the United States was projected to run below the Fed's 2 percent goal over the next few years.

And while he admitted that QE3 was "no panacea," he argued the open-ended nature of the third round of bond buying makes the program more flexible and should make people feel more certain that U.S. economic growth, which registered a paltry annualized pace of 1.3 percent in the second quarter, will pick up.

"An easing in financial conditions and greater public confidence should help promote more rapid economic growth and faster job gains over coming quarters," Bernanke said.

In response to the financial crisis and deep recession of 2007-2009, the Fed cut overnight interest rates to near zero and bought some $2.3 trillion in mortgage and U.S. Treasury securities to try to stimulate spending and boost employment.

U.S. job growth remains lackluster, but the unemployment rate did fall to 7.8 percent in September, its lowest in nearly four years.

For Bernanke, what is good for the world's largest economy is ultimately good for the world as well.

"Assessments of the international impact of U.S. monetary policies should give appropriate weight to their beneficial effects on global growth and stability," he said.

Why Poetry Should be Metered | Literary & Visual Arts | Arts ...

By Evan Mantyk
Epoch Times Contributor
Created: October 12, 2012 Last Updated: October 12, 2012

Poetry should be metered, because metered poetry is, quite simply, better than free verse.? This is for the same reason that realist art trumps impressionist art and that Baroque music trumps rock and roll and hip-hop. It is because art, in its best state, is not about the experience of the individual it is about the shared experience of all humanity.

\>");

When you read a poem that is understandable and follows the most basic conventions that are accepted in the English-speaking world then it can be widely experienced and appreciated, whether by a young woman in Iowa or an old man in New Delhi.

The same goes for realist art and Baroque music. You may not like the poem, artwork, or music and may not find it particularly stimulating, but at the very least you can generally understand what it is, what some of its goals are, how it defines goodness, and how it strives toward that goodness. It is fairly easy to tell whether it has been executed decently or not.

In the case of a poem, if it maintains a balanced meter and if it relies on the standard conventions of poetry, such rhyme, alliteration, metaphor, simile, and others, then it is clear what it values as good. Now, whether such a conventional poem is actually good or not will depend on the contemporary message being conveyed and whether or not it is clear, engaging, and worthwhile. The prerequisite first, though, is that the poem meet the basic standards for being good. Your poem may have a message that is clear, engaging, and worthwhile, but the amount of people it would have the potential to reach would be severely fragmented and diminished.

The poetry, art, and music proliferated today moves further and further toward fragmentation in perspective. If you do not explain to a person why a modern poem, painting, or song is supposedly good, there is a strong chance they will have no idea that it is good at all.

This is not merely a philosophical discussion. The shared experience of humanity, either ignored by most modern poetry, music, and art or embraced by most classical poetry, music, and art, is something with real scientific implications. The most obvious being the Mozart effect, whereby by plants and children have been scientifically shown to benefit from listening to music by 18th century composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Yet, the Mozart effect is really just the tip of the iceberg. British scientist Rupert Sheldrake calls this connection between our fellow men morphic resonance and posits that each person and animal has a morphogenetic field. The morphic resonance and morphogenetic fields operate across time and space with the connection being stronger between organisms and things that are similar.

Sheldrake discusses these concepts in the context of the human genetic code. Modern science poured billions of dollars into the Human Genome Project with the theory being that we could find bad genes that cause diseases passed on supposedly in your genes from your parents and could find genes that explain your physical and potentially mentally characteristics similarly passed on. Indeed, people today say something is ?in his genes? or say someone has ?bad genes? or ?good genes.?

Sheldrake posits that the whole approach is wrong. Modern science?s obsession with a human body and genes is like someone who has never seen a TV before taking it apart and wondering how the components create the images on the screen. It is the intangible signal coming in that creates the images. Similarly, it is the intangible morphogenetic fields and morphic resonance that determine what will happen. If you?re field is very similar to your father?s field and he had heart disease then it may be similarly warped in such a way as to create heart disease in you.

Sheldrake?s theory goes a long way in explaining inexplicable but observable phenomena in human and animal life. The implication for poetry and the arts is also profound. Regardless of what spiritual persuasion, or lack thereof, you may be from, reality as we know it is different from what modern science has told us. The intangible has much more power than we realize.

When poetry, art, or music aligns with the time-tested traditions left by millennia of poets, artists, and musicians and is widely acceptable by people today then it could truly have a positive impact on you and society, physically, mentally, and spiritually.? It positively activates the scientifically and undeniably real connection between all of us. Call it what you want, morphogenetic fields, the shared human experience, or simply good poetry.

EPA may slash use of ethanol in gasoline

By Paul A. Eisenstein, The Detroit Bureau

The EPA may shift corn away from ethanol use to reduce demand on drought-impacted farms.

Only months ago, the EPA was pressing hard to expand the use of ethanol in the nation?s gasoline supply, but in the wake of this summer?s fierce drought, the agency may soon reverse course and actually trim back because of shortages of corn used to produce the renewable fuel.

Sen. Orrin Hatch, an influential Utah Republican, this week urged the EPA to curb ethanol requirements, as have 200 members of the House and the governors of eight corn-producing states. Under a 2007 law signed by former President George W. Bush, 15.2 billion gallons of ethanol would need to be used this year, with the plan to more than double that by 2022.

But the viability of that plan came under sharp inspection when, yesterday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture forecast a sharp decline in farm grain output predicting next year?s global corn stockpiles will 5.4 percent ? to the lowest levels in 39 years.? The USDA warned that only 23 percent of American corn crop yields are in ?good? or ?excellent? shape compared with 70 percent last year.

That sent prices for corn spiraling upward.? Hatch and others are hoping that by at least reducing the potential demand for corn stocks for fuel use demand prices may level off ? which could, in turn, prevent a spiral driving up overall U.S. inflation rates.

?In the face of corn shortages and escalating prices brought on by wide-spread droughts throughout the United States, I urge you to exercise your waiver authority to modify the corn-ethanol requirements for the Renewable Fuel Standards,? Hatch wrote in a letter to EPA administrator Lisa Jackson.

Ironically, Hatch and others now calling on the EPA to back off on ethanol usage were proponents of the 2007 Energy Independence Securities Act ? which was aimed at both reducing dependence upon foreign oil while also propping up American farmers by mandating more use of renewable fuels.

When passed, the EPA was expected to direct 5 billion of ethanol into the fuel supply for 2007, but the sliding scale reached 15.2 billion gallons this year.? And it will peak at 36 billion gallons by 2022.

The law was designed to assuage skeptics who felt that even during good times on the farm too much corn would be diverted to fuel. By 2022, a full 21 billion gallons of ethanol are to come from so-called cellulosic production.? While still in the development stage, new production facilities have turned to a variety of alternatives to corn, ranging from scrap paper to grain chaff that would normally not be used in the food supply.

Ironically, the EPA has been struggling to find ways to meet the mandate since consumer demand for ethanol has lagged expectations ? even though subsidies keep the price per gallon below that of regular unleaded gasoline.

The agency has increased the amount of ethanol in use in regular gas.? And it last year approved rules that would require the use of such fuel in older vehicles produced before the industry began upgrading their fuel systems to tolerate the use of alcohol-based fuels. Ethanol, like other alcohols, is highly corrosive and makers now use special stainless steel or modified synthetic fuel line and engine components to resist damage. Critics continue to dispute EPA claims that the recent increase in ethanol content will be safe for older cars and other products ? from ATVs to chainsaws ? that run on gasoline.

While a number of states are joining the call to reduce ethanol usage overall this coming year, including governors of Maryland and Delaware, where major poultry operations could be hard hit by rising cots ? not ?everyone echoes that sentiment.

The Michigan Farm Bureau is opposing the request.? Indeed, some farm states are hoping to see corn prices rise in the months ahead to help offset declining yields in their local crops that could put some farmers out of business.? A report in the Detroit News noted that Michigan?s five ethanol refineries used 98 million bushels of corn annually ? compared to a combined 70 million for livestock, dairy and poultry feed.

The EPA is expected to rule on the ethanol waiver request by early November.

Dragon capsule reaches space station, chocolate ripple ice cream intact

SpaceX's Dragon capsule delivered cargo including a little ice cream to the International Space Station Wednesday, confirming that a new era for NASA has finally been realized.

By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / October 10, 2012

This image from NASA-TV shows the capture of the Dragon capsule by a robot arm on the International Space Station early Wednesday. It's the first official delivery by the California-based SpaceX company under a $1.6 billion contract with NASA. The contract calls for 12 such shipments.

Dragon is laden with scientific gear, replacement parts for the space station, and a welcome shipment of chocolate ripple ice cream stashed in an otherwise empty lab freezer the capsule carried up.

The capsule, which launched Sunday night atop SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket, reached the orbiting outpost about 15 minutes ahead of schedule. Using the station's robotic arm, Akihiki Hoshide, a station flight engineer, snagged Dragon at 7:56 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time. A little over an hour later, Dragon was safely docked with the station.

"Looks like we've tamed the dragon," said station commander Sunita Williams when the arm initially captured the capsule.

"We're happy she's on board with us," she said, adding a special shout-out for the ice cream.

The mission marks an important milestone for NASA along a path first set out under the Bush administration and confirmed by President Obama. After the space shuttle Columbia disaster in February 2003, NASA has pivoted to focus on sending humans beyond low-Earth orbit, while it has steered the job of ferrying supplies and astronauts to the space station to private companies.

The effort to carry astronauts to and from low-Earth orbit took a step forward in August, when NASA announced agreements worth a combined $1.1 billion to help SpaceX, Boeing, and Sierra Nevada Corporation develop such capabilities. But Dragon's arrival at the space station Wednesday ? the first flight under a 12-flight, $1.6-billion contract ? shows that the goal of bringing commercial carriers into the station resupply business is now being realized.

SpaceX is one of two US companies with resupply contracts. The second, Orbital Sciences Corp., is slated to test-fly its Antares booster by year's end and loft its first demonstration flight early next year.

Thursday, the station crew is schedule to open Dragon's hatch and inspect the craft's interior before unloading the cargo. Dragon will remain docked at the station until Oct. 28, when it's slated to return 1,673 pounds of hardware and experiment samples to Earth. Dragon's ability to return cargo from the space station to Earth is a unique capability among all the craft currently serving the station. Dragon will parachute to an ocean splashdown off the southern California coast, where it will be plucked out of the water and returned to an unloading facility at the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro, Calif.

Although a key stage of Dragon's first commercial mission has been completed, the launch Sunday evening saw one of the nine engines powering the Falcon 9's first stage shut down 79 seconds after launch.

The first-stage propulsion system is designed to withstand the loss of two engines before the delivery of its primary payload is jeopardized, the company notes. Once on-board computers detected the failure, they quickly readjusted the rocket's path to keep it on course to intercept the space station.

The course correction, however, came at the expense of a second payload the Falcon 9 was carrying -- a prototype communications satellite for ORBCOMM Inc. and built by Sierra Nevada. Although the satellite is on orbit, it's hurtling around Earth at a much lower altitude than planned.

It's common for commercial launch companies to piggyback several payloads on one rocket. This was to be the first demonstration that a commercial satellite and a government station-resupply payload could share the same ride. Even with the failure of one engine on the first stage, the second stage carrying both payloads could have delivered the satellite to its proper orbit as well. But the satellite was deposited short of its goal to avoid either the second stage or the satellite coming too close to the space station as they headed higher.

SpaceX engineers are still trying to uncover the cause of the engine failure. ?

Samsung Gets Sensible With Galaxy S III Mini

Samsung on Thursday announced the Galaxy S III mini, a smaller version of its Galaxy S III 4.8-inch smartphone. With a 4-inch screen, the S III mini is aimed at consumers who are looking for more practical smartphones, Samsung said. Does this mean the full-fledged Galaxy S III is impractical? Or could the statement be a swipe at the iPhone 5?

Englewood Construction - Commercial Construction Blog - Building ...

Developing Personal Relationships

(L-R) William Di Santo, president of Englewood Construction; Dan Tessarolo, principal with Chipman Design Architecture; and Chuck Taylor, director of operations for Englewood, at the Ryder Cup in September.

Sometimes, things just come together perfectly.

That?s really the only way I can describe Englewood Construction?s experience as a sponsor of the Ryder Cup last month. After the months of preparations, logistics, and, the occasional bit of worrying, the event went off flawlessly.

Well, unless of course you were the U.S. team, but we won?t get into that.

As a national general contractor dedicated to delivering the best commercial construction services to clients, we can identify quality work when we see it. What the PGA did for the Ryder Cup was nothing short of impressive.

The ?wow-factor? was apparent the moment we entered Medinah Country Club. The PGA did an amazing job setting up what must have been an enormous undertaking. As a commercial general contractor, we took time to appreciate our surroundings and site work, which looked on par with some of the best commercial construction projects I have seen. Apparently, it took 14 weeks to construct all of the temporary luxury tents, concessions, and merchandising locations and it will take another five weeks just to tear them down. Our ?hard hats? are off to the Ryder Cup construction crews and planners.

The idea behind sponsoring the Ryder Cup was to show our enormous gratitude to the clients that partnered with a national commercial construction firm like Englewood Construction on their new retail construction projects, new restaurant remodels, shopping center landlord site prep, etc. to help see us through one of the most difficult times the commercial real estate industry has ever faced.

In turn, we provided our clients, which include national and international retailers, with a very special Ryder Cup experience. Everything was top notch, from the amenities in the Captain?s Club tent to our views overlooking the 8th and 9th holes. In fact, our tent was so nice a reporter from Crain?s Chicago Business interviewed us for ?Inside a Ryder Cup hospitality tent.?

Looking back however, the most important thing about the Ryder Cup wasn?t the luxury tent or even the golf. It was fostering personal relationships with our clients by talking to them about everything from our families and hobbies to movies and golf. There is no time like face time to learn you have things in common with clients outside of commercial construction news.

And while we tried to steer our conversations away from commercial construction trends and commercial material costs, they eventually came up. It?s wasn?t the goal of a function like this, but it?s good to hear commercial construction jobs are picking up and retail and restaurant developers are feeling optimistic. I guess you could say that we did business without actually trying to do business.

This leads me to an important round of ?thank you?s?.

First, I can?t say enough about the team at Englewood Construction who put a lot of hours into making this happen. Coordinating with the Ryder Cup and all of our clients took a lot of time and dedication and to have it come off so well speaks to the quality of their work. Our outside real estate marketing firm, Taylor Johnson, was also instrumental in helping us spread the word and securing the Crain?s interview.

Most importantly, we have to thank our clients. None of this would have been possible without their continued business and dedication to Englewood Construction. The whole event reminded me just how lucky we are to work with so many amazing people.

Now about that U.S. team performance?.

Small Business Hiring Plans Are Declining | PRAGMATIC ...

By Rom Badilla, CFA, Bondsquawk

Fueled by a drop in hiring plans, sentiment by small businesses in the U.S. failed to increase in September which suggests stalling of improvements in both the labor markets and the economy. The National Federation of Independent Businesses released the results of its Small Business Optimism which fell by one tenth of a point to 92.8 in September.

The lackluster reading failed to meet expectations as the median of economists? forecasts was at 93.5. In addition, the lack of improvement is evident as the latest print continues to remain near its six month average of 92.9. With 691 firms responding to the survey, there were some noteworthy changes in the components that raise concern toward economic growth.

NFIB Small Business Optimism Index

The net percentage of business owners surveyed that are planning to hire in the next 3 months plunged to 4% from 10% in September. The component of the Small Business survey continues to remain weak at this point in the recovery from a historical perspective. With the September data which marks the 39th?month of the current recovery, the six month average of the Plans to Hire component stands at 5.5%. Comparatively, the six month average at the same point in time in the recovery following the recession of 2001 was at 16.0%. Similarly, the Plans to Hire average following the 1990 to 1991 recession was at 11.5%. The net percent is defined by the NFIB as the number of firms reporting increases minus the number of firms reporting decreases.

NFIB Hiring Plans

In addition, small businesses owners are reporting less activity in business investment which coincides with the?slowdown in other indicators. The net number of firms reporting Increased Capital Spending fell from 24% in the previous month to 21% in September. The six month average of this component is at 23%.

Other components were mixed. The net number of firms reporting Higher Selling Prices fell from 9% in the previous period to 6% in September. The decline suggests less demand as businesses are less likely to raise prices. The net number of firms showing a Plan to Increase Inventory was unchanged at -1%.

While the components were generally negative in September, the outlook for small businesses picked up according to the survey results. The net number of firms Expecting a Better Economy improved to 2% from -2% in August and -8% in July. While the September figure is barely positive, keep in mind that it is the highest reading since the first quarter of 2011. Also, the Good Time to Expand outlook index increased by three percent on a net basis to 7% in September and is now above the six-month average of 6%. The net number of businesses seeing Positive Earnings Trends picked up from -28% in August to -27%.

All in all, the sideways action in the Small Business Optimism Index may be viewed as a reflection of the muddle through economy. As mentioned earlier, small businesses are the backbone of the U.S. economy as they are a major part in the job growth machine. The drop in the employment components is a concern as job growth for the U.S. economy remains lackluster as evident by last Friday?s Non-Farm Payrolls. Despite this, the outlook for small businesses have improved and may pickup further if economic growth begins to accelerate. Of course, the European Debt Crisis and the Fiscal Cliff are major headwinds that may prevent that from happening in the months ahead. For now, today?s survey results are consistent with a slow growth economy. As a result, bond yields should remain low and capped for the time being.

According to?Trade Monster?s Bond Trading Center, the yield on the 10-Year U.S. Treasury is at 1.71%, down 4 basis points from the previous close.

The 2012 Campaign Decoder

Biden's $1 Trillion Tax Increase 10/5

Junk Food ? When Joe Biden said that the Obama administration wanted to raise taxes by $1 trillion dollars, the Romney campaign pounced on it as a gaffe. Alas, for five years Obama has been campaigning on raising the tax rate on top earners when the Bush era tax cuts expire. He even made a big deal about it in the debate the night before.

Romney's '47 percent' comments 9/17

Campaign Wound ? Romney's comments about the 47 percent. Danger Will Robinson! If Romney really is trying to woo those independent voters he mentioned in the surreptitiously recorded video, this candid moment in which Romney wrote off half the electorate as moochers created a new obstacle.

After Middle East protests, Romney criticizes Obama 9/11

Campaign Wound ? In the wake of the death of Ambassador Chris Stevens, Romney attacks Obama over his Middle East policy. Polls showed that voters did not approve of Romney's quick criticism of the president. Even Republicans who shared his sentiment about the president's weak foreign policy thought the timing was off.

Romney refuses to release tax records 7/20

Junk Food ? Romney repeatedly refuses to release his tax records. A wide swath of voters have had a hard time finding something to like about Romney. They also don't find him authentic. The refusal to release tax returns did not help dispel people's fears that he had something to hide.

Obama: 'You didn't build that' 7/13

Campaign Wound ? At a rally, Obama utters the words "you didn't build that." Republicans nourished themselves on this line for weeks. Even if no independent voters were turned off by the remarks, it was a successful turnout mechanism for the GOP. For Republicans, the line-even if taken partially out of context-confirmed everything they thought about the president.

Supreme Court OKs Obamacare 6/28

Seminar Topic ? The Supreme Court backs Obamacare. This was a huge policy victory for the president and anyone who has benefited from the Affordable Care Act. For conservatives, it prompted outrage over Chief Justice John Roberts, their former darling. The Supreme Court backs Obamacare. It gave Romney a rallying cry: Only by electing him could Republicans do away with the awful law.

Booker criticizes Obama ads on Bain 5/21

Junk Food ? On Meet the Press, campaign surrogate Cory Booker criticized Obama's TV ads about Romney's time at Bain. Voters like Obama, even if they don't think he is doing the best job. That may be because he still reminds them of the hopeful candidate of 2008. So Booker's charge--that Obama was acting like any other politician--had the potential to damage the president's brand. Obama officials quickly convinced the mayor to clean up his remarks.

In high school Romney bullied gay student 5/10

Shiny Object ? Revelations of Romney's high-school bullying. This had no policy impact. But the fact that the candidate never offered his own youth story is one of the curious features of his campaign. The bullying story didn't hurt him, but he didn't give voters his own narrative, which may explain why people have had trouble warming to him.

Obama supports gay marriage rights 5/9

Seminar Topic ? Obama speaks out in favor of gay marriage rights. The policy impact was minimal. The president was simply expressing a preference, though his remarks may have inched the culture forward toward accepting same sex unions. Politically, it pleased a very important Democratic constituency, and generated a lot of cash.

Obama: I 'wasn't born with a silver spoon' 4/19

Shiny Object ? At a rally, Obama reminded voters that he "wasn't born with a silver spoon in his mouth." The response from Romney fans was that the president was talking about their man. It was pure umbrage taking. But Obama's words are one of his stock phrases. He's been saying it long before Romney was a candidate.

Democratic strategist on Ann Romney: she's 'never worked a hard day' 4/12

Junk Food ? The Hilary Rosen kerfuffle. The Democratic strategist said Ann Romney had "never worked a day in her life." The Obama team threw Rosen under the bus and then rented a few more buses to complete the job. Obama's chief strategist and campaign manager denounced her comments, and Ann Romney delighted in being able to play the aggrieved party. In the end, it didn't help Romney's standing with women. He still trails.

Obama to Medvedev: 'more flexibility' after election 3/26

Seminar Topic ? Obama assured then Russian President Dmitry Medvedev he would have "more flexibility" to cut foreign policy deals after the election. Romney suggested that this sidelines deal making proved that Obama wasn't being straight with the public. It never went anywhere, but it was an important moment. It reminded us that despite the election's focus on the economy, it is in foreign policy where a president's flexibility can really matter.

Romney's campaign like 'Etch-a-Sketch' 3/21

Shiny Object ? "It's almost like an Etch-a-Sketch." When a senior staffer compared the candidate's campaign to the popular toy, it seemed to confirm the charge that Mitt Romney truly had no core beliefs. And for a couple of days the GOP primary went insane. Rick Santorum was seen clutching the toy. Romney didn't overreact-and the controversy never caught on the way the toy did.
