Leukemia walk draws hundreds to Northampton ... - Cancer Kick

Light up nightLighted balloons were held high in honor of survivors, supporters, and those who perished tonight at the light up the night walk at Northampton Community College in Bethlehem Township.

Karl Musselman carried a gold balloon. His father died of leukemia 25 years ago.

Joni Buchert carried two. White because she beat cancer 14 years ago, and gold because her sister, Ginny, lost her fight with bone marrow cancer eight years ago.

?I walk for a cure,? she said.

Hundreds of Lehigh Valley residents with similar stories today circled the Northampton Community College campus in Bethlehem Township for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society?s Light The Night Walk.

Walkers carried gold balloons in memory of loved ones who died of cancer. Cancer survivors carried white and supporters red. The balloons, each containing a plastic light bulb, glowed as they bounced around the campus.

The walk last year raised $262,000 for the Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter. This year?s goal is $298,000.

?Light The Night Walk gives hope to patients and their families and lets them know that they are not alone in their battle against cancer,? said Maida R. Milone, the executive director of the Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter. ?It is a night to pay tribute to lives touched by cancer, honor those we have lost, and celebrate the lives that have been saved.?

Jasmine Rodriguez, of Allentown, walked with her close friends and family members. Rodriguez lost her daughter, Jamayra, nearly eight years ago to leukemia. She was 14.

?Jamayra fought hard all her life,? said Rodriguez. ?With all of the lifesaving research that LLS has funded, the life expectancy of children diagnosed with leukemia has increased significantly. Our son is proof of that.?

Rodriquez?s son, Willie, was also diagnosed with leukemia. He was 23 months old at the time of the diagnosis. He battled the blood cancer off-and-on and finally received a bone marrow transplant five years ago when he was 13 years old. He is now in remission.
