Washington, DC, Announces Six Locations Medical Marijuana Will ...

Washington, DC--(ENEWSPF)--March 30, 2012. ?A nearly 15-year fight in the nation?s capital to allow patients suffering from cancer, HIV/AIDS and other diseases to use marijuana with a doctor?s recommendation has reached a crescendo, with the city naming six locations that will be allowed to grow medical marijuana legally under local law (including a company partly owned by celebrity talk show host Montel Williams). The announcement, which is sure to irk the Obama administration and some in Congress, comes at a time when U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and the Justice Department are waging an unprecedented war on medical marijuana patients and providers in numerous states.

?The mayor and council should be commended for moving forward with DC?s medical marijuana program, even though the Obama administration has declared open season on medical patients and providers,? said Bill Piper, director of national affairs for the Drug Policy Alliance. ?Medical marijuana will soon be growing just blocks from the White House and Congress ? opponents of a compassionate marijuana policy need to realize that they?re on the losing side of history.?

DC voters first approved medical marijuana in 1998 but Congress blocked implementation of the ballot measure by prohibiting the district from enacting the law. That prohibition was repealed by Congress in 2009 and in 2010 the DC Council unanimously approved medical marijuana legislation, joining 16 states that allow patients to use marijuana with a doctor?s recommendation. The DC law allows up to ten cultivation centers and eight medical marijuana dispensaries to operate in the district. The locations of the medical marijuana dispensaries will be announced later this year.

Medical marijuana advocates worry about how the Obama administration will react. As a candidate for president, Obama said both that he supported the right of doctors to recommend marijuana to their patients, and that he would stop the federal government from wasting law enforcement resources on raiding, arresting and prosecuting people for medical marijuana, especially if they are complying with their state law. He made due on this promise in his first year in the White House. The Department of Justice issued guidance to US Attorneys urging them not to waste resources prosecuting people for medical marijuana who are in compliance with their state?s law.

In the last year, however, the Obama administration has changed course. The DEA has increased its raids on medical marijuana dispensaries. US Attorneys have sent letters to landlords who rent office space to dispensaries threatening to arrest them and seize their buildings under asset forfeiture laws. The Treasury Department has threatened to prosecute banks that open checking or savings accounts for dispensaries. The IRS has denied dispensaries the ordinary business expense deductions allowed for all other forms of businesses. The ATF has said that any medical marijuana patient who possesses a firearm will get ten years in federal prison. US Attorneys have even sent letters to state legislators and governors, timed to influence state decision-making processes, declaring that they might arrest people in their state if they pass a medical marijuana law or amend or expand existing medical marijuana laws.

Patient advocates worry that patients will lack access to the medicine they need if the Obama administration raids DC?s medical marijuana dispensaries and cultivation centers. Unlike most medical marijuana states, DC law prohibits patients from cultivating their own marijuana. DC is also the only medical marijuana state to make it a crime for a patient to possess marijuana not bought from a dispensary. If the Justice Department shuts down DC?s medical marijuana dispensaries and cancer, HIV/AIDS and other patients are forced to buy marijuana off the streets, they will face arrest, prosecution and incarceration.

?Given the Obama administration?s ongoing war on medical marijuana dispensaries, it is irresponsible of the DC Council not to allow patients to grown their own ? and it?s outright cruel to subject them to jail time for obtaining their medicine from whatever source they can,? said Piper. ?The DC Council should pass emergency legislation providing for a back-up plan in case the federal government shuts down local dispensaries.?

A good mobile packages review is usually the starting point in lessening corporate mobile communication costs, which all have become a big line item on a large number of company spending budgets. Looking at packages regularly leads to a typical primary cost savings that is at least 20 %. Regardless of what size the corporation is, it is a significant total amount. The price savings usually do not stop right there as the plan comparison is only the preliminary step of the expense management plan meant for cellular devices.

Wireless providers advertise enterprise options as being the top deals intended for companies. Although they can be, they aren?t always. Picking out a prepackaged option designed to match all business customers oftentimes leads to spending too much money. The thing that makes this a whole lot worse is that even though business pays excessively, not all individuals have the features they want. The one person benefitting from this situation will be the carrier, who is given money for under used products.

The provider would not point it out, therefore the enterprise customer must identify the issue then do something to deal with it. A technology firm that focuses on mobile communication managing can help by doing an examination of one?s cellular phone and data packages. The results is going to pinpoint which wireless carrier or package changes are required. The auditing firm will work right with all the carrier?s networks for the greatest offer for the corporate client. Companies should acquire the solutions they require at the lowest prices. Through commissioning this audit on a consistent basis, an organization optimizes their communication costs.

A package comparison can do more than merely establish the best cellular phone plans. Furthermore, it will bring billing issues to light promptly. Companies frequently believe carriers don?t make some mistakes and as a consequence, Information technology as well as book keeping employees will not review carrier statements. The fact is that invoicing mistakes tend to be commonplace. If uncovered and taken to the attention of the company as quickly as possible, they could be corrected on time to receive a adjustment on the statement.

Service providers oftentimes try to make enterprise clients come to feel beholden towards them relating to the services getting supplied. Businesses should really keep in mind that they are the clientele in this relationship. Service providers should really be making an effort to acquire their business, not the other way round. A normal option assessment will keep service providers on their toes so they really continually make their very best plans accessible to prevent losing corporate clients. Firms can feel at ease realizing that they have the most suitable package at the lowest expense.

Information technology employees frequently execute option review as well as comparing responsibilities independently. With only a single service provider and a few phones, this task is usually quick and simple. As more service providers are added in, the volume of handsets increases, and type of handsets enlarges to include a variety of mobile phones and pc tablets, the project becomes more time-consuming and complex.

An auditing agency eliminates the burden of package comparing from central IT staff. This doesn?t mean that IT individuals must remove their selves totally out of the course of action. They simply have got another team there to validate their review, come up with recommendations relating to package optimization and even cost benefits, and offer device supervision service if needed.

Without taking a cell phone plans comparison, your company could be wasting a lot of unnecessary funds. With budgets being so tight these days, it is vital to save every dime possible. To maximize your business cell phone management, visit Gill-Technologies.com for help. Visit out site today for more information and pricing.

Scotty McCreery Performs "Water Tower Town" on American Idol Results Show

It's hard to think of two more contrasting crooners than the pair who took to the American Idol stage last night.

We had Nicki Minaj, who gyrated about and delivered an energetic performance of "Starships," scantily-clad outfit and all.

And then we had the season 10 champion Scotty McCreery, a laid back country boy who lets his deep, mature voice do all the work, in this case standing behind a mic and belting out a version of his new single, "Water Tower Town."

McCreery was also presented, as seen here, with a framed, enlarged version of his platinum debut album, "Clear as Day."

Which season 11 contestant might duplicate this success? Our money still must be on Phillip Phillips.

Got The Health and fitness Blues? Try These Easy Ideas ...

Training Your Way To Some Much healthier You

Too many people approach their fitness goals hesitantly. In many cases, they do not how to start, or simply lack the motivation to start. Motivating yourself can be as easy as making your workouts fun. The following tips may help you begin.

Workouts are not just about losing weight, they are about having fun. Try adding music to your workout to liven things up and make it that much more enjoyable. Your favorite tunes can be powerful motivational assistants that help you power through your exercise. Music will really help get you moving and improve your workouts. When you incorporate music into your workout routine, you will put yourself in the right frame of mind to enjoy your workout.

If you do not find ways to make exercising fun, it will be a lot harder to stick to your workout goals. Group activities can help make your workout less isolated and more fun. Recruit a buddy or several to accompany you on lunchtime strolls or trips to the workout facility. Making your workout more social can help you reconnect with friends and make your workout more fun than when you go at it alone. Working out with a pal can add elements of fun to an exercise plan, helping you to forget you are working out at all.

Workout video games can be a great weight loss tool. Exercising with a video game feels more like playing and having a good time than working out. If you are doing exercises that are enjoyable and fun, you will reduce the risk of getting tired and calling it quits.

Go shopping for exercise clothes to get your mind in the right place to exercise. Purchase exercise clothing that will help you feel good about your appearance. There are many styles available. Some workout gear can be both flattering to your figure and a lot of fun. Make it your chance to be creative! Don?t be afraid to be adventurous! You should choose exercise outfits that you like to wear so that you will feel good about going to the gym or working out.

Try to avoid doing the same exercises each day because, at some point, you just won?t feel like doing them anymore. Your exercise routine can come to a grinding halt if you allow yourself to get bored. Mix up your workout regimens in order to maximize your motivation and keep workouts fun and interesting. This is a vital point, because prolonged breaks from working out tend to make restarting far more difficult.

As we have just stated, tennis apparel is something that cannot be dismissed ? or at least should never be ignored. But I wanted to pause for a moment so you can reflect on the value of what you have just read. In light of all that is offered, and there is a lot, then this is a great time to be reading this. The last outstanding areas for discussion may be even more important. You should always give yourself a reward if you have done a good job. Fitness is a reward in itself.

Many believe exercise is little more than an irritating task, however, it can be much more enjoyable than that. A variety of methods can be applied to make exercising more fun. This article contains the advice you need to develop a fun exercise routine.

Famed Venice view goes commercial

Residents disagree over plans to convert a 500-year-old palazzo into a department store in Venice, Italy.

? A local, slice-of-life story from a Monitor correspondent.

Immortalized by Venetian painter Cana?letto, it forms the graceful backdrop to a million tourist snaps of Venice?s famous Rialto Bridge. But a plan to convert a 500-year-old palazzo into a department store has met with hostility here.

The Renaissance building, known as the Fondaco dei Tedeschi, overlooks the Grand Canal and was built in the early 16th century as the headquarters for German merchants. In the 20th century it became Venice?s main post office, but has stood empty and unused for several years.

Now there are plans to refurbish the building and slice off part of its roof to form a terrace with a panoramic view.

Italia Nostra (Our Italy), a heritage group, says the ?very serious alterations? will gravely compromise the architectural integrity and historical identity of the building. Nonsense, says the mayor of Venice, who is backing the plan. The project is due to begin by December 2012.

Venice falling

Compacting soil means the flood-prone city is sinking

Web edition : 4:13 pm

Venice is still sinking and will probably continue to do so for a long time, a new study suggests. That?s bad news for the local government, which had already put a stop to groundwater pumping in an effort to curb the city?s subsidence.

?It was thought that the sinking had pretty much been stabilized, but now we know it will continue into the future indefinitely,? says Yehuda Bock, a geodesist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif.

Today?s sinking has little to do with human activities, Bock and colleagues report online March 28 in Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems. Soil is compacting beneath Venice, bringing the city down with it. And Venice rides atop a slab of Earth?s crust that is slowly diving beneath the Apennine Mountains, giving the city a tilt noticed for the first time in the new study.

Data collected by GPS devices and satellite radar systems showed the city dropping an average of 1 to 2 millimeters per year between 2000 and 2010.

That?s significantly slower than it sank decades ago, says Bock, and slower than other cities such as New Orleans are sinking today. So some researchers don?t think this natural subsidence is worth worrying about.

?We think this is a very small number,? says Tazio Strozzi, a physicist with the GAMMA remote-sensing consulting company in G?mligen, Switzerland. Previous satellite measurements have detected a similar amount of subsidence, he says.

But Bock worries that even a millimeter or two a year could, over time, compound the risks of changing sea levels. During the 20th century, sea levels rose 13 centimeters at Venice, helping to make floods seven times more common.?

?They built barriers to raise during high tide,? says Bock. ?They?ll probably have to use them more often than they had anticipated.?

Swedish Uses Colon Cancer Live Stream to Fight Disease - Exec ...

Physicians will respond on camera to questions during live streamed colonoscopy on March 28

SEATTLE, March 27, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Colorectal cancer doesn't broadcast its presence until it's too late. Swedish Health Services hopes to change that by getting the word out about safe and effective prevention options.

On Wednesday, March 28, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. (PDT), Swedish physicians and staff will host its first-ever online chat and video stream of a colonoscopy procedure. The stream will be made available online at www.swedish.org/colonlive.

In the United States today, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths for both men and women. It is estimated that 51,000 people will die of the disease this year and 143,000 new cases will be diagnosed.

The American Cancer Society recommends that, upon turning age 50, everyone should get a colonoscopy to prevent colon and rectal cancers. The test is designed to find both early cancer and polyps (growths in your large intestine).

"Right now, only about 60 percent of patients get screened, even though the effectiveness in reducing deaths has been proven," said Dr. Raman Menon, a colon and rectal surgeon at Swedish. "Regular testing is a powerful weapon for preventing the onset of the disease. Removing polyps in the colon keeps the cancer from ever evolving into anything dangerous. The disease is easily treatable if found at an early stage."

"Education is our best, most cost-effective weapon against colorectal cancer," said Dr. Nicholas Procaccini, a gastroenterologist at Swedish. "Screening helps people stay well and it saves lives."

In nine of 10 patients who found their cancers early, their chance for survival in five years is high. Very often these people live a normal life span. If people neglect screening, the cancer can grow and spread without being noticed.

A colonoscopy takes about 30 minutes and is not painful. It is an internal examination of the colon, or large intestine, and rectum. It is done using an instrument called a colonoscope, which has a very small camera attached to a flexible tube that the examiner uses to scope the area. The procedure reviews the entire length of a colon.

As part of Colon Cancer Awareness Month, Drs. Menon and Procaccini will host an online chat and live stream featuring two colonoscopy procedures, one of a male and the other of a female patient. The live stream will be focused around the importance of undergoing routine colonoscopies after age 50 with a focus on advances in colonoscopy procedures.

During the live stream the public will have the chance to communicate with the physicians who performed the procedures and ask questions. The physicians will respond live on camera throughout the program. The dialogue will be focused around the importance of early detection in preventing and treating colon and rectal health issues. Anyone interested may also join the conversation via Twitter by using the hashtag #ColonLive.

Swedish is committed to identifying new ways of communicating to the community to better inform the public and provide important information about relevant health issues. Recently, Dr. Rod Kratz, a colon and rectal surgeon at Swedish, shared his experiences preparing for his first colonoscopy on YouTube. Dr. Kratz underwent his first at age 40 due to potential family history of colon and rectal health issues. His video can be found online here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVocXp-CYHU.

For more information, or to schedule your own colonoscopy, visit: http://www.swedish.org/colorectal ?or call 206-386-6600.

Please Do Not Buy Cheap Android Phones

i-heart-you-this-muchListen, I understand the pain that comes with not being able to afford nice things. I really do. But for the love of everything mighty, do not waste your money, or stand by as your loved ones waste their money, on cheap Android phones. Thanks to generous subsidies in the U.S., often only a few dollars separates a cheap Android phone from a top-tier model. With the exception of handsets like the Galaxy Note tabletphone, Droid Razr MAXX and Galaxy Nexus, all of which cost $299, there are a lot of quality Android phones to be had for just $199. Why get something like this lump, the $80 (after rebate) LG Lucid, and live with a bargain phone that will likely be shortly abandoned and destined to live without proper updates. You're setting yourself up for a bucket of fail.

Pope greeted by crowds upon arrival to Mexico

This is Pope Benedict XVI's first trip to the Latin American country; his predecessor, Pope John Paul II, made five trips over the course of his papacy.

By Adrian Gomez Licon and Michael Weissenstein,?The Associated Press / March 24, 2012

It had become tradition in Mexico. Before daybreak, youths would creep as close as security permitted and serenade their beloved Pope John Paul II with a song of greeting and celebration.

Now a new, less familiar pope had come, seeking to strengthen his own ties with the largest Spanish-speaking Catholic nation.

So well before dawn Saturday, two dozen youths from a Guadalajara church group gathered near the school where the Pope Benedict XVI was staying. "We sang with all our heart and all our force," said Maria Fernanda de Luna, a member of the group. "It gave us goosebumps to sing 'Las Mananitas' for him."

RELATED:?Catholicism in Latin America: 5 key facts

Songs, joyful throngs, church bells and confetti welcomed Benedict as he began his first trip to Mexico, a celebration that seemed to erupt spontaneously out of what had been a thin, sun-dazed crowd.

As Pope Benedict XVI's plane appeared in the shimmering heat of Friday afternoon, people poured from their homes. They packed sidewalks five and six deep, screaming ecstatically as the pope passed, waving slowly. Some burst into tears.

Many had said moments earlier that they could never love a pope as strongly as Benedict's predecessor, John Paul II. But the presence of a pope on Mexican soil touched a chord of overwhelming respect and adoration for the papacy itself, the personification for many of the Catholic Church, and God. Thousands found themselves taken aback by their own emotions.

As a girl, Celia del Rosario Escobar, 42, saw John Paul II on one of his five trips to Mexico, which brought him near-universal adoration.

"I was 12 and it's an experience that still makes a deep impression on me," she said. "I thought this would be different, but, no, the experience is the same."

"I can't speak," she murmured, pressing her hands to her chest and starting to cry.

Belief in the goodness and power of the pope runs deep in Guanajuato, the most observantly Catholic state in Mexico, a place of deep social conservatism and the wellspring of an armed uprising against harsh anti-clerical laws in the 1920s. Some in the crowd came for literal healing, a blessing from the pope's passage that would cure illness, or bring them more work. Others sought inspiration, rejuvenation of their faith, energy to be a better parent.

Popes "have a personality, a positive energy. The simple fact of seeing him is a great satisfaction," said Jose Luis Perez Daza, a 47-year-old lawyer from Mexico City who was among thousands pouring off of buses Saturday and trudging three miles (five kilometers) to a sprawling campground in the city of Silao to await Sunday's papal Mass.

An extinct species of scops owl has been discovered in Madeira

Friday, March 23, 2012

An international team of scientists, including some from Majorca and the Canary Islands, have described a new type of fossil scops owl, the first extinct bird on the archipelago of Madeira (Portugal). Otus mauli, which was also the first nocturnal bird of prey described in the area, lived on land and became extinct as a result of humans arriving on the island.

Twenty years ago, the German researcher Harald Pieper discovered fossil remains of a small nocturnal bird of prey in Madeira, which, until now, had not been studied in depth. The international team of palaeontologists has shown that the remains belong to a previously unknown extinct species of scops owl, which they have called Otus mauli.

"It has long legs and wings slightly shorter than the continental European scops owl from which it derives" Josep Antoni Alcover, one of the authors of the study and researcher at the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA), a mixed centre of the university of the Balearic Islands and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).

The result of the analysis of the proportions of the remains found, which has been published in the journal Zootaxa, reveals that Otus mauli could be a land inhabiting species that ate invertebrates and "occasionally lizards or birds".

"It is likely that their extinction is linked to the arrival of humans and the fauna they brought with them", Alcover explains. He also points out that their disappearance formed part of a pattern of extinction of the island's species, which occurred in virtually all the islands of the world.

According to researchers, amongst the causes of extinction of this scops owl, the destruction of its habitat is highlighted, as Madeira had a lot of serious fires during the seven years that followed the Portuguese arrival. Furthermore, humans brought new birds with diseases that were unfamiliar to the native species, as well as rats and mice that could prey on eggs of animals that had nests close to the ground.

Exclusive to Madeira?

The same or a similar species has been investigated in Porto Santo, another island of the archipelago of Madeira. "This is extremely interesting" the researcher says, "but difficult to assess because the materials found are limited and fragmented".

"If the scops owls of Madeira and Porto Santo were different species, it would mean that the Otus' flying ability is much more limited than continental scops owls. The distance between the two islands would be enough to isolate them" Alcover points out.

The homogeneity of the scops owls' measurements on the two islands, as well as the differences compared to European scops owls suggests that they were genetically isolated from the European populations. The distance between the continent and the island was enough to explain the difference in the species.

On this island they expect to discover new species of birds in the near future "which will report a world that disappeared just a few hundred years ago". "The same thing will happen in the Azores islands where there is already evidence that a scops owl different to the ones in Madeira and Europe that is also extinct" the scientist says.

A team of researchers led by Michael H. Antoni, director of the Center for Psycho-Oncology Research at the University of Miami (UM) has shown that a stress management program tailored to women with breast cancer can alter tumor-promoting processes at the molecular level. The new study recently published in the journal Biological Psychiatry is one of the first to link psychological intervention with genetic expression in cancer patients.

According to the study, the group-based Cognitive-Behavioral Stress Management (CBSM) intervention designed by the researchers affects which genes in the cells of the immune system are turned on and off, in ways that may facilitate better recovery during treatment for breast cancer, explains Antoni, professor of Psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences, and professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and program leader of Biobehavioral Oncology at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

"For the women in the CBSM groups, there was better psychological adaptation to the whole process of going through treatment for breast cancer and there were physiological changes that indicated that the women were recovering better," Antoni says. "The results suggest that the stress management intervention mitigates the influence of the stress of cancer treatment and promotes recovery over the first year."

Previous research has shown that during times of adversity, our nervous and endocrine systems send signals to the immune system, which defends us from disease. In response, our body activates specific genes inside immune cells called white blood cells or leukocytes, Antoni explains.

"For the women that participated in the intervention groups, the genes that signal the production of molecules associated with a healthy immune response, such as type I interferon were up-regulated - meaning they were producing more of these substances, compared to levels seen in the control group," Antoni says. "At the same time, the genes responsible for the production of substances involved in cancer progression, such as pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines and matrix metalloproteinases were down-regulated."

CBSM is a 10-week group-based program developed at UM that combines relaxation, imagery and deep breathing, along with cognitive behavior therapy, which is designed to help patients reduce bodily tension, change the way they deal with intrusive stressful thoughts, decrease negative moods, and improve their interpersonal communication skills. In the study, 79 women undergoing primary treatment for stage 0-III breast cancer were randomized into a 10 week CBSM program or a psychoeducational control group in the weeks following surgery. Six month and 12-month follow up assessments were conducted.

"You essentially have this timeframe in a woman's life where she is getting diagnosed with breast cancer, followed by surgery, then chemotherapy or radiation, and it's very stressful," Antoni says. "This can be an emotionally and physically exhausting period offering little opportunity for recovery. If stress affects the immune system in a negative way, then their recovery could be slowed down and those patients taking longer to recover may be at risk for poorer health outcomes. Conversely, if stress management intervention can reduce the impact of stress on the immune system then recovery may be hastened."

The research team plans to follow the women in this cohort to see if CBSM intervention and its effects on leukocyte gene expression are predictive of reoccurrence and/or long term health outcomes.

The Majority Of Proprietary Trading And Real-Estate Firms Deliver ...

by Igor Viana on March 21, 2012

Because of the reality that there are lots of people today these days that are incredibly much enthusiastic about obtaining an adequate education in proprietary trading and Rio de Janeiro real estate, especially online day trading and apartments for sale in Ipanema, most prop trading firms nowadays no longer just concentrate on the investing business itself. Rather, they appeal to those people that wish to follow occupations as day traders or real estate investors by offering them the training they will need so as to participate in a proprietary trading enterprise.

Most of the time, trading firms give short courses of 4 to six months duration which might be aimed at teaching on line day trading, online stock trading and all the crucial trading techniques that aid aspiring investors excel. The short term seminars include typical classes which could either be in a regular classroom setting or online. People that choose online courses are commonly those ambitious traders who?re also engaged in different careers such as real estate in Rio de Janeiro investing and have restricted time allotted for the trading industry.

For those who have been in a proprietary trading firm before but could be having a tough time succeeding, it would not be a major issue for the reason that many prop trading firms also perform seminars that will help them improve their trading strategies. The workshops are usually a much better option for all those people pursuing other careers besides getting a trader.

Day trading firms these days also greatly contribute in producing effective traders. Worm model of back-up telomere repair strategy could speed identification of anti-cancer drugs

LA JOLLA, CA----Rapidly dividing cancer cells are skilled at patching up damage that would stop normal cells in their tracks, including wear and tear of telomeres, the protective caps at the end of each chromosome.

Loss of telomeres forces cells out of the dividing game and into a growth arrest state called "senescence," but cancer cells evade this by employing an enzyme called telomerase to extend eroded telomeres.

If telomerase fails to activate, the tumor cells of about 10 percent of all human cancers have a back-up strategy to build serviceable telomeres and keep dividing. How that pathway, called ALT for alternative lengthening of telomeres, works is unclear, because researchers have had limited options to study it experimentally.

Now scientists at the at Salk Institute for Biological Studies have created roundworms that eke out an existence, and even manage to reproduce, relying solely on ALT to maintain telomeres. That study, published March 16 in EMBO Journal, provides a valuable tool to tinker with the ALT pathway and learn how to block it, with a goal of forcing tumor cells to senesce.

"These worms are the first multicellular organisms we can study in the laboratory that maintain their telomeres through the ALT pathway and not through telomerase," says Jan Karlseder, a professor in Salk's Molecular and Cell Biology Laboratory and the study's senior author. "Up to now we could only study ALT in cell lines derived from tumor cells. Now we can screen for compounds and genes that suppress or regulate ALT in a whole organism, which in worms is fairly easy to do."

The components of telomere-building pathways are prime targets for cancer researchers. "There is a huge interest in drugs that block telomerase, since 90 percent of cancers use it for telomere maintenance," says Daniel Lackner, a postdoctoral fellow in the Karlseder lab and one of the study's first authors. "But these drugs won't work for the 10 percent of cancers that use the ALT pathway. In fact, some evidence suggests that drugs targeting telomerase might actually increase ALT, making the need for ALT inhibitors more pressing."

The new study stems from a 2008 study from the Karlseder lab that was published in Cell. In that paper, they mutated a gene encoding a telomere-binding protein in roundworms. The resulting mutants displayed functional, but slightly scruffier-looking telomeres than those built by telomerase. That was a strong hint that when forced, worm cells, like human cells, can turn on the ALT pathway.

For the new study, the team pushed the mutant worms' survival capacity to the limit. This time they knocked out a second gene, telomerase itself, and found that these double mutants could reproduce continuously without undergoing senescence. Over the past 3 years a strain of double mutant worms has propagated for over 180 generations.

The group then used biochemistry to confirm that the worms depend totally on ALT for telomere maintenance. The telomeres of double mutants were more sloppily constructed than superior, telomerase-made caps and were similar in length and overall structure to chromosome caps displayed by human cancer cells that employ ALT.

The double mutant worms also contained wisps of telomeric DNA, called c-circles, that are unique by-products of ALT, further evidence that they were persisting via ALT.

Intriguingly, other investigators have reported that c-circles are present in the blood of human bone cancer patients and could potentially serve as a diagnostic for cancers that depend on the ALT rather than the telomerase pathway.

Although the worms are living long, species-wise, they are not quite prospering---- which is exactly what one would expect. The study reports that the double mutants have fewer offspring than normal worms, which is how roundworms exhibit "stress." And many have fused chromosomes, a likely outcome of having barely serviceable telomeres. But what counts is that the animals are viable, rely on ALT only, and their genome reflects aberrations seen in human tumor cells. In short, they are ready for analysis.

Currently, researchers cannot predict what mechanisms a cancer will to use to maintain the telomeres. "Cancers of the bones, stomach and soft tissues may be more efficient in activating ALT than telomerase pathways," says Karlseder, noting that indicators of ALT have also been observed in other cancer types. "We don't know why a tumor chooses one pathway over the other. All we know is that ALT may be switched on in response to telomerase inhibition, which means we must understand this pathway."
