NEW YORK (The Blaze/AP) ? Former New York Times publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger has died at age 86.

The newspaper reported that his family said Sulzberger died Saturday at his home in Southampton, N.Y., after a long illness. He had retired in 1992 after three decades at the paper?s helm and was succeeded by his son, Arthur Jr.

Sulzberger?s family has controlled the newspaper since his grandfather Arthur Ochs acquired it in 1896.

The company has struggled in recent years but during Sulzberger?s tenure it reached new levels of influence and profit.

The newspaper won 31 Pulitzer prizes, published the Pentagon Papers and won a libel case victory in New York Times vs. Sullivan that established important First Amendment protections for the press.

In a note to New York Times employees obtained by the Poynter Institute, Arthur Sulzberger Jr. said ?Punch,? as his father was known, ?always believed that by closely adhering to our Company?s most fundamental precepts we would greatly enhance our ability to produce outstanding journalism.?

?Punch will be sorely missed by his family and his many friends, but we can take some comfort in the fact that his legacy and his abiding belief in the value of quality news and information will always be with us,? Sulzberger wrote.

Bots Drive 16% of U.S. Web Traffic [INFOGRAPHIC]

Along with trolls and Rickrolls, bots are the scourge of the Internet.

Automated clicks on ads and other web content drive down value, diminish investments and hurt integrity. And the bot problem only seems to be getting worse as technology advances. This summer, for example, a Long Island startup gained widespread attention after claiming that 80% of the clicks it paid for in Facebook ads came from bots and not humans.

[More from Mashable: Which Are the Most Social Colleges? [INFOGRAPHIC]]

But just how bad is the bot epidemic -- and how can bots be beat?

The online advertising company Solve Media recently ran some analytics on the issue, and came up with a number of interesting results, which are presented in the following infographic.

[More from Mashable: Our iPhones Are Depleting the Earth?s Resources [INFOGRAPHIC]]

Among Solve's more interesting findings is that, while the United States may have the most bots in terms of sheer numbers, it actually has a lower rate of non-consumer traffic than some other countries. Some 16 percent of U.S. traffic is bot-based, according to Solve, but in Singapore that number is an astonishing 56 percent. In Taiwan, it's 54 percent, and 43 percent in the Philippines.

That can mean a potential major loss of money for advertisers. Online display advertising will reach $15.3 billion this year, according to some estimates, so all that bot traffic means an overall potential spending waste by advertisers that reaches into the hundreds of millions of dollars at a minimum.

So what can you, online advertiser, do to defeat the bots? Looking for cost-per-engagement advertising opportunities, partnering with publishers who actively fight bot traffic and implementing tracking technology are three good ways to get started. For more, check out the full infographic below.

What are the best anti-bot measures you know of? Let us know in the comments.

Iraq floats plan to get Syrian opponents talking

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari has proposed a two-stage plan to bring both sides of the Syrian conflict together to discuss a political transition.

Zebari said in an interview that he made the proposal at a ministerial meeting Friday of 20 countries mainly opposed to the government of President Bashar Assad of Syria.

The first stage would be to bring together the countries that endorsed a blueprint leading to a political transition that was adopted in Geneva on June 30 to now focus on implementing that blueprint, he said.

Zebari said the second stage would be to invite representatives of the government and the opposition to a conference in a neutral place.

He said that international envoy Lakhdar Brahimi would have to carry the plan forward.

Penn Immunologists Find a Molecule That Puts the ... - Health.am

? Immunology ? Sep 28, 2012

We couldn?t live without our immune systems, always tuned to detect and eradicate invading pathogens and particles. But sometimes the immune response goes overboard, triggering autoimmune diseases like lupus, asthma or inflammatory bowel disease.

A new study led by University of Pennsylvania researchers has now identified a crucial signaling molecule involved in counterbalancing the immune system attack.

?The immune response is like driving a car,? said Christopher Hunter, professor and chair in the Department of Pathobiology in Penn?s School of Veterinary Medicine. ?You hit the accelerator and develop this response that?s required to protect you from a pathogen, but, unless you have a brake to guide the response, then you?ll just careen off the road and die because you can?t control the speed of the response.?

The research to characterize this immune system ?brake? was led by Hunter and Aisling O?Hara Hall, a doctoral candidate in the Immunology Graduate Group. Additional Penn collaborators included scientists from the Penn Genome Frontiers Institute?s Department of Biology and the Perelman School of Medicine?s Department of Medicine. Researchers from Merck Research Laboratories, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, Harvard Medical School and Janssen Research and Development also contributed to the work, which was published in the journal Immunity.

"Healthy people have these cells - you have them, I have them - that are called Tregs,? or regulatory T cells, Hunter said. ?If you don?t have them you develop spontaneous inflammation and disease.?

Different forms of regulatory T cells operate as the brakes on various kinds of inflammation, but, until now, scientists hadn?t been certain of how these Tregs became specialized to do their particular jobs.

Hall, Hunter and colleagues decided to follow up on a molecule called IL-27. Scientists used to think IL-27 played a role in causing inflammation, but, in 2005, a team of Penn researchers, including Hunter, found the opposite; it was actually involved in suppressing inflammation. Thus, when mice that lack IL-27 are challenged with the parasite Toxoplasma gondii, they develop overwhelming inflammation.

?We never worked out how it did that, but it was a paradigm change at the time,? Hunter said.

In the new study, the researchers delved deeper into IL-27?s role. They found that exposing regulatory T cells to IL-27 promoted their ability to suppress a particular type of inflammation. The Penn-led team also demonstrated that they could rescue infected IL-27-deficient mice by giving them a transfusion of regulatory T cells. This finding suggests that IL-27 is required to produce the Treg cells that normally keep inflammatory responses in check during infection.

?Very surprisingly, we were able to show that the Tregs could ameliorate the pathology in this system,? Hall said. ?We don?t think this is the only mechanism by which IL-27 limits immune pathology, but it sheds light on one mechanism by which it could be functioning.?

Further experiments showed that Tregs express a different suite of genes in the presence of IL-27 as compared to another molecule that has been implicated in this process, interferon gamma, or IFN-?. The researchers? findings indicate that the two molecules have division of labor when it comes to suppressing inflammation: IL-27 seems to be important in helping control inflammation at the site of inflammation, whereas IFN-? appears more significant in the peripheral tissues.

?At the site of inflammation, where you?re getting your pathology, that?s where IL- 27 is important,? Hall said.

With a new understanding of how IL-27 may cause a class of Tregs to become specialized inflammation fighters, researchers have a new target for ameliorating the unwanted inflammation associated with all kinds of autoimmune conditions.

?Now we have a molecular signature that may be relevant in inflammatory bowel disease, in multiple sclerosis, in colitis and Crohn?s disease, in rheumatoid arthritis, in lupus,? Hunter said.

Next on tap, the team plans to study IL-27 in the context of asthma, lupus and arthritis.

In addition to Hall and Hunter, the authors included Beena John, Claudia Gonza?lez Lombana, Gretchen Harms Pritchard, Jonathan S. Silver, Jason S. Stumhofer, Tajie H. Harris, Elia D. Tait Wojno, Sagie Wagage and Philip Scott of Penn Vet?s Department of Pathobiology; Daniel P. Beiting, David S. Roos and Sara Cheery of the Penn Genome Frontiers Institute Department of Biology; Steven Reiner, formerly of the Penn Department of Medicine; Cristina M. Tato and Daniel Cua of Merck Research Laboratories; Yasmine Belkaid, Guillaume Oldenhove, Nicolas Bouladoux and John Grainger of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease; Laurence A. Turka of Harvard Medical School; and M. Merle Elloso of Janssen Research and Development.

The study was supported by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the National Institutes of Health.

Facebook Messenger 2.0 for iPhone brings new design to conversations, swipe left for friends list

Facebook Messenger 20 for iPhone brings new design to conversations, swipe left for friends list

Facebook debuted the new look of its dedicated Messenger app on Android last week and and just as promised, now it's available on the iPhone as well. Facebook Messenger 2.0 brings a new SMS-style bubble layout to conversations, a swipe left gesture to reveal one's friends list and the ability to push the friends you message most to the top of the list. As mentioned along with the Android update this is a part of a new release schedule cycle that should see updates arriving every 4 - 8 weeks. That means you can mark your calendar for the next refresh if this is your social network of choice, but for now just grab the latest version from iTunes.

NDA Submission Update for Ponatinib for Chronic Myeloid - MPR

ARIAD Pharmaceuticals announced it has completed the rolling submission of the New Drug Application (NDA) for ponatinib to the FDA, seeking marketing approval in patients with resistant or intolerant chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and Philadelphia-chromosome positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph+ ALL).

ARIAD provided the FDA with remaining chemistry, manufacturing, and controls (CMC) data. The Company has requested accelerated approval and a priority review of the ponatinib application by the FDA.

Ponatinib is an investigational BCR-ABL inhibitor that also selectively inhibits certain other tyrosine kinases in preclinical studies, including FLT3, RET, KIT, and the members of the FGFR and PDGFR families of kinases. The primary target for ponatinib is BCR-ABL, an abnormal tyrosine kinase that is expressed in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and Philadelphia-chromosome positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph+ ALL). Ponatinib targets not only native BCR-ABL but also its isoforms that carry mutations that confer resistance to treatment with existing tyrosine kinase inhibitors, including the T315I mutation for which no effective therapy currently exists.

For more information call (877) 621-2302 or visit www.ariad.com.

Digital Innovations: What's Happening In Social Media Marketing ...

Digital Innovations: Whats Happening in Social Media MarketingDigital Innovations

I?m moderating a panel at Digital East on Tuesday about digital innovations and social media. So, I thought I would take a look at some of the innovations that I?ve seen and try to predict some of the things that we?re likely to see in the future.

First of all, I?m sitting here recording post with Siri on my iPad, which I just think it?s awesome. I no longer have to type in my blog posts. That lead me to think about a world that?s more audio-based, than text-based ? where many of our daily tasks are completed using software such as Siri to record our thoughts and transmit them in digital space. We?ve already seen a world where social media is more visual, is it possible that the future will be audio?

Maybe consumers in the future will speak to their devices to search and purchase products online. And, what would that be like? Would it expend from virtual space to real spaces? Would this allow us to shop without ever leaving our car? For instance, would everything be drive-through, allowing us to speak our needs into a digital device, swipe our phone to pay for the item, then pull around to have purchases loaded into our car?

It?s an interesting thought, but what will that mean for retailers who rely on their brick and mortar stores to entice unplanned purchases and the social element inherent in a brick and mortar shopping experience? And, what will this mean for prior digital innovations, such as newcomer Shopkick and the QR codes used ubiquitously in stores?

Digital Innovation: where we came from

Sometimes the best way to understand where we?re going is to take a look back at where we stand. In the not-too-distant past the Internet was just for scientists and for the military. But, beginning in the 1990s you saw the emergence of the World Wide Web. The ease of web development, emergence of easy-to-use browsers, like GOOGLE (Happy 14th Birthday) and cheap internet provides such as AOL, spread usage of the internet to ever-increasing groups of users.

Then, of course, we had a number of businesses jumping into the Internet especially in the form of e-commerce, forming what all know as the infamous dot-coms. The dot-coms failed miserably by the end of the 1990s and early 2000s mainly because their business models were very flawed.

Most dot-coms did not developed an effective way of commercializing their business model. Others failed to provide value for consumers over existing offerings. An exception is Amazon.com, which not only thrived during the dot-com failure, it eventually drove out its brick-and-mortar competition.

Digital Innovation: where we are now

We see the same kind of thing happening today on social networks. Facebook, which quickly swept much of the known world ? gaining nearly 1 Billion users ? was introduced to the market just a few short months ago. Despite significant buzz in the financial markets, Facebook lost a lot of its luster since then and even the major private stockholders who bought Facebook before it went public are dumping much of that stock.

Several problems underpin Facebook?s problem and are inherent in digital innovations. First, the technology that enables these digital innovations creates an environment where other businesses can create competing products. So, just as many dot-coms failed because too many businesses were chasing the few dollars being spent online, social networks are all chasing the same users with too few differences that create REAL value for consumers.

Social networks are also TOO open. Where once you had friends sharing interesting posts, you now have businesses who know little about sharing in social media drowning out the voices of your friends. Recently, Twitter has almost become useless unless you seriously restrict your network, with the message to noise ratio creating negative user experiences. Many users quit Facebook with the same frustration.

And, like the dot-com digital innovation, most social networks struggle to find a means to monetize their platforms and the use of paid promotions only decreases the user experience further.

Just like Amazon before it, Google appears to have developed the magic elixir of success. Today, nearly 70% of worldwide search occurs on Google.

Google?s success comes because they never lost sight of creating user value, Google?s efforts to monetize their platform are successful without declining user experience. Google?s success comes through giving away significant value to users ? free searches for consumers and free tools for businesses.

What this means for you

Digital innovations occur at an increasingly fast pace. Your business models must look to the future of these digital innovations rather than past digital platforms.

You also have to learn from the mistakes of those who came before. Creating customer value creates long-term success.

Android Embraces, iPhone 5 Passes on Near-Field Communication Data Sharing

Conspicuously absent on the iPhone 5, near-field communication (NFC) enables smart phones to share purchasing and security data with a tap--a feature that has surged on the Android platform

nfc, rfid, security, apple, iphoneNEAR FIELD COMMUNICATION (NFC): As phone-makers, retailers and credit card companies work out the feasibility of NFC as a gateway to facilitating commerce, others want smart phones that can function like the badges that many people swipe en route to their offices every morning. Read More??

The map rift with Google may not be Apple's biggest misstep with the iPhone 5. Instead, it might be the company's decision to exclude near-field communication (NFC). Most major smart phone?makers?including Samsung, Nokia and HTC?are backing the technology for its ability to turn their devices into mobile wallets, with which users can make purchases and digitally store boarding passes and coupons. As phone-makers, retailers and credit card companies work out the feasibility of NFC as a gateway to facilitating commerce, others see the technology as opening doors?literally.

NFC-enabled smart phones can function like the badges that many people swipe en route to their offices every morning. A key difference between NFC and the radio-frequency chips embedded in employee ID badges is NFC's two-way communication capability, making it a more versatile tool for security.

Two companies are testing how NFC might improve employee access to their facilities: Good Technology, which sells mobile data security software, and Netflix, the subscription-based entertainment content provider. The California-based companies recently wrapped up several-week-long pilot programs to see whether it makes sense to replace employee building-access photo badges and key fobs with NFC-enabled smart phones. A small sample of employees received Samsung GALAXY S III handsets loaded with an app that automatically confirmed their identities at NFC-enabled security checkpoints.

NFC uses electromagnetic radio fields to allow two devices to exchange data in either direction when passed within four or five centimeters of one another. Radio-frequency identification (RFID), by comparison, works from several meters away, but information moves only unidirectionally?for example from an E-ZPass tag on a windshield to a tollbooth reader.

Although much larger and heavier than photo badges, the GALAXY phones used at Good Technology and Netflix ostensibly would provide increased security because they can be PIN-protected?if the device were lost or stolen, the average person without hacking skills would not be able to access information stored on it.

"Having an authentication credential on a phone is more secure than a badge or another physical access token because the only security I have on that is my picture," says Michael Mahan, Good Technology's senior vice president of special markets. "If I lose my badge, someone else could fairly easily pick it up and use it to get past security."

As part of the test project, Mahan also equipped his own office with an NFC-enabled lock to control access when he was traveling. In addition to allowing Mahan to grant office access to specific employees remotely, he could also pull data from the NFC system that showed who had used his office, and when.

At both companies most of the employees liked the prospect of simply waving a smart phone over an NFC reader so much, they said they would be willing to load the app on their personal handsets if they could not get shiny new GALAXY phones from their employers. More than 106 million NFC-enabled Google Android phones shipped in 2011, according to research firm IHS iSuppli. NFC support can in some cases be added to a smart phone by installing an NFC-compatible SIM card or microSD card.

Although both Good and Netflix plan to extend NFC testing to additional employees, some concerns remain, including whether adding the NFC app to someone's personal smart phone would prematurely drain the battery if the app is left on for an extended period of time. NFC is designed to use only a small amount of energy, but a smart phone with a dead battery would defeat the purpose of using the device as a security badge?or anything else.

Apple has not left its customers out in the cold when it comes to short-range communications that might someday be used for purchases or security. Instead of NFC, the company has (since the debut of its iPhone 4S in 2011) endorsed Bluetooth 4.0, which includes a low-energy version of the wireless radio technology that is a bit slower than NFC but has a much greater range (about 50 meters). The new iOS 6 mobile operating system features a new app?Passbook?designed to use Bluetooth LE (low energy) for data exchange. As with NFC, the key challenge now is getting retailers and other businesses to develop apps as well as buy readers and other equipment that can take advantage of the technology.

China Issues Measures on Income Tax for Enterprise Relocation ...

Sept. 28 ? China?s State Administration of Taxation (?SAT?) released the ?Administrative Measures on Income Tax for the Policy-Based Relocation of Enterprises (Announcement [2012] No.40, hereinafter referred to as ?Measures?)? on August 10, aiming to regulate the administration of levying income tax on enterprises undergoing policy-based relocation. Key provisions of the Measures can be found below.

For the purpose of the Measures, the policy-related relocation of enterprises refers to the relocation of all or part of an enterprise initiated by the government based on the needs of social public interest, such as relocation due to the needs of national defense, diplomacy?or social welfare housing projects.

Independent accounting

Enterprises shall conduct separate taxation administration and accounting for relocation income, relocation expenses, the taxation treatment of relocated assets, and the administrative affairs regarding the collection of income tax on relocation income, according to the requirements of the Measures.

For enterprises failing to conduct the separate taxation administration and accounting, the income tax treatment thereof shall be carried out by regarding such relocation as non-policy-related relocation (e.g. self-initiated relocation or commercial relocation) and the provisions of the Measures shall not apply.

Taxation treatment for the relocation of assets

  • Where an asset involved in the relocation of an enterprise may continue to be used immediately after simple installation or without installation, the depreciation or amortization for the net value thereof shall continue to be calculated based on the remaining years of depreciation or amortization of the asset as prescribed by the Enterprise Income Tax Law and its implementing regulations after the asset is put into use again.
  • Where an asset involved in the relocation of an enterprise can only be re-used after an overhaul, the net value thereof and the expenses incurred during the overhaul process shall be regarded as a taxable cost of the asset. The depreciation or amortization of the asset shall be calculated based on the remaining useful life of the asset after the asset is put into service again.
  • For the land expropriated during the relocation process which adopts the land substitution method, the taxable cost of the land received from the substitution?shall be?the net value of the land expropriated and all fees and expenses incurred before the substituting land is put into use. Such costs shall be amortized over the years prescribed by the Enterprise Income Tax Law and its implementing regulations after the substituting land is put into use.

Moreover, the expenses incurred by the enterprise from the procurement of assets shall not be deducted from the relocation income.

Taxable income

The relocation income and relocation expenses of enterprises incurred during the relocation period may not be included in the taxable income of the current period and can be settled on a consolidated basis in the year in which the relocation is completed. The Measures provide a maximum of five years for the relocation, and enterprises meeting the following conditions shall be regarded as having completed the relocation:

  • The relocation planning has?been basically?completed; and
  • The production and operation income of the current year accounts for more than 50 percent of the production and operation income of the year before the relocation.

The Measures are scheduled to take effect on October 1, 2012, with the ?Notice of the State Administration of Taxation on Relevant Issues concerning the Enterprise Income Tax on Income from Policy-Related Relocation or Disposal (guoshuihan[2009] No.118)? simultaneously repealed.

The Ultimate House Party with Ed Sheeran! | The Student Pocket ...

What a night! The three words which instantly spring to mind when looking back at what truly was ?The Ultimate House Party?. After many months of planning and many weeks of waiting, the special night finally took place this summer, which for one person in particular, was a night that will never be forgotten. Ed Sheeran, double Brit Award winner, with a platinum selling debut album, countless singles in the charts and an overall popularity which can?t be put into words, made the dreams of one north London student come true this May; performing an exclusive secret garden set in the presence of her closest friends and family.

It may well be the case that you had already heard of this amazing prize we at The Student Pocket Guide were giving away. Way back in the summer of 2011, just before the meteoric rise of Ed Sheeran had begun, we were lucky enough to catch up with him on his UK tour to arrange a competition that couldn?t be matched: a one off house gig, with provided drinks and cleaners the next day. What followed was a influx of interest and popularity with what was on offer. The eyes of the nation?s newspapers were caught, the voices of blogs and websites were heard and competition entries soon tipped the hundreds and then thousands, out of which, one person would be chosen, for one very special night. Hannah Goodwin, 21 years old of Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, was this lucky person who played host to this once in a lifetime occasion. Here is how it went!

Simply put, it couldn?t have gone any better. Great people, great setting and of course, an unforgettable performance by Ed Sheeran. The months of hard work came to fruition with everything coming together perfectly; even the sun came out to catch a glimpse of the nation?s favourite red head!

Many of Hannah?s friends had no idea what was going on when we first showed up at her house. ?Why are there cameras here??, a few of them whispered to each other. And when Ed casually walked through the front door, then out into the garden, you can imagine the utter shock splattered on their faces! After mingling with the crowd and greeting Hannah and her family, Ed exchanged a few words with us sat on a bench at the back of the garden, in front of an eagerly listening crowd. ?You know what??, he begins,? ?I?ve done so many back garden gigs. It was actually how I used to make a living; going around student houses with a bag of CDs making ?100 a time.?

We went on to discuss his recent time spent in America on tour with Snow Patrol; a tour which he unfortunately had to cut short by a few shows in May. That aside, Ed went on to explain how things over there have compared to his journey in the UK. ?It?s very similar to how things were last May in Britain. We?ve started creating a small buzz over there, so hopefully it builds.? His focus since has shifted back to the UK, having played a series of shows and festivals. Many of you Ed Sheeran fans I am sure would have seen his brilliant performance at BBC Radio One?s Hackney Weekend on TV, or, if you were lucky enough ? at the show, which was a highlight it seems for so many artists this summer. There is always one venue or festival, however, that is a particular favourite that lives long in the memory for many artists. For Ed, this was Reading 2011. ?It was mental. I played the Festival Republic tent and it was so good. Very, very fun!?

As the conversation went on, we spoke about Ed?s love of cucumber (randomly), future records he?s been working on and Lego building amongst a host of other things, including the possibility of a headline arena tour. ?Arenas are difficult to do because you have to hold a crowd for one and a half to two hours; and I don?t have a band so I?d be doing it on my own. As soon as I have enough songs to be able to do a good set, I?ll play an arena tour!? One thing we didn?t have to wait to see was his latest tattoo! As he showed us and everyone there, he explained the story behind his latest addition. ?I grew up next to a cafe called ?The Dancing Goat?, which my best friends own. I walked to school with them every day for like seven years, so I thought I?d get a goat!? We spoke a little more then closed the interview to a rapturous applause, which signified the moment that everyone had been waiting for, Ed?s intimate set.

The garden was lit with outdoor lamps and candles, which coupled with the sunset, just as the gig was in full flow, created a perfect serene atmosphere. Out came the classics of ?Lego House?, ?The A Team?, and ?Small Bump?, with all in attendance singing along and getting quite simply blown away. Even the mosquito buzzing around the sound recorder was having a blast! The ?My my, my my? of ?Give Me Love? resonated around the garden, with everyone smiling as they repeated Ed?s famous lyrics. You could sense everyone there trying to capture the moment; realising that this really was a once in a lifetime occasion.

Then came the highlight of the night. ?You Need Me, I Don?t Need You?, which even for Ed, was something special. As Ed began the second single from his debut album ?+?, in the corner of his eye to his amazement, was Hannah?s brother, Niall, rapping and singing every word. Even the camera crew had to remove their headphones to believe what they were hearing!? The rest of the song soon became a word-for-word duet, with both guys going at it full flow, rapping lyrics, ?I?m always doing shows if I?m not I?m in the studio; truly broke, never growing up call me Rufio; melody music maker, reading all the papers; they say I?m up-and-coming like I?m? (You know the rest!)?, which received the biggest cheer of the night.

It was the perfect end to a mesmerising set. The final chord was met with a great cheer, and as Ed stepped down from the top of the garden, he left a crowd ecstatic from what they had just experienced. ?I?m kinda lost for words. I can?t describe how happy I am!?, Hannah told us afterwards. Her brother, Niall, was also left a little shell shocked. ?I don?t realise what I?ve just done, I?ve just sung with a guy who has two Brit Awards! Amazing?, he told us with a look of disbelief at what just happened. Everyone congregated in the garden with drinks and food, still buzzing about with a childish excitement. Photos were taken with Ed; CDs, arms, legs and shoes were signed, and all attending had their final chance to have a few words with the man of the moment, rounding off an unforgettable night.

Seeing an artist of Ed?s calibre in an environment of such intimacy was a real privilege. It was an experience that we will never forget and one that we are truly thankful for. And do you know what the great thing is? You can watch the nights events unfold on our website and YouTube Channel, SPGtv! Make sure you check out ?The Ultimate House Party? video online and see for yourself what it?s like getting up close with Ed, catch parts of his set, including ?The A Team? ?Small Bump? and of course the epic ?You Need Me, I Don?t Need You?, plus find out how you could win both an acoustic guitar and a copy of ?+?, signed by the man himself!

We hope you enjoy it, and a huge thanks go out to Ed, Hannah and her family who made ?The Ultimate House Party? a night to remember! As Hannah put it, ?Tonight was amazing. I think I?m going to remember it for the rest of my life??

German parliament bans laptops; members bring a typewriter

A ban on laptops by the German parliament has given rise to a humorous, anachronistic protest by the country's Pirate Party: instead of laptops, they brought in a?typewriter.

The ban became official a week ago, when the "Council of Elders," a group of senior officials, added new rules to the parliament guidelines that specifically prohibited laptops. Their objection is ostensibly that the fans and keyboards on such devices are loud and distracting; tablets are allowed, since they generally operate silently.

A second problem is the use of social networks during state business. Young and Internet-savvy factions like the Pirate Party advocate dissemination of information using the likes of Twitter and Facebook, but the Council of Elders deems it a "parallel debate" (as rendered?by Google Translate) and therefore bans such activity.

When the ban was announced, the Pirate Party members brought out an old electric typewriter instead, drawing instant remonstration from the parliamentary president,?Klaus Schlie, who accused them of "monkey business."

Monkey business or not, the symbolic?challenge to the ban resulted in debate and permission, for now, for members?to bring laptops. The matter was reported on the German news site KN Online, and the typewriter itself was captured by Twitter user @appgra.

The larger question, that of using social networks to augment political debates during parliament time, will be discussed at a later session.

Well, first off, are there any other possible roles? Like say some wannabe and failure supernatural hunter that, by a stroke of luck, comes upon those two. Or maybe another undead, friend of the family maybe, who wants to take the servants for his/her own. Etc.

If not, can I reserve the male servant?

The last one sounded quite intriguing and I myself had been thinking of various plot twists. I wanted to get the main ones filled out then get down to the other roles. But, which the friend could be male or female, you could take both characters. All up to you on what you prefer to do.

If Rock does not want the male sevant, may I have him?

Well then, I'll let TwiliX take the servant, and I'll go for the woman stealing (or man stealer, or both...) "friend". Well, I'll probably lose in the end since good guys always win (meh) but eh, I'll make sure to mess things up plenty before that...
