WILDOMAR: William Calabrese's Death in ... - Seegmiller Law Firm

WILDOMAR, California ? (Riverside County) An accidental firework explosion at a minor league ball park killed 20-year-old William Calabrese Friday afternoon about 150 yards from Pete Lehr Drive and Diamond Drive, according to a press release issued by the Riverside County Sheriff Coroner Department.

At about 5 p.m. on Friday, Calabrese was preparing the evening fireworks show when all at once the fireworks exploded fatally injuring him and causing minor injuries to two others at the accident scene.

Emergency workers transported Calabrese by helicopter to the trauma center at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton for treatment of third-degree burns covering 90-percent of his body, according to news and coroner reports. ?He later died of his injuries at 8:10 a.m. on September 2.

The two injured ? a Riverside County Fire Department inspector and a second pyrotechnics employee ? were treated for minor injuries at a local hospital.

Calabrese, a former La Jolla High School student, was attending the University of California at Santa Barbara student and was working over the summer for the firework company because he liked working with pyrotechnics, his family told news reporters.

Police are conducting a full investigation into what may have caused the fireworks to explode.

?Fireworks-related deaths are not common in the United States and typically those killed are amateurs using illegal fireworks,? said Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of the Seegmiller Law Firm. ?Trained pyrotechnics professionals know how to handle these dangerous products so police need to investigate whether there was some sort of product defect or other factor that contributed to this young man?s death.?

Indeed, there are relatively few deaths resulting from firework explosions at all in the United States and most tend to be the result of amateurs using illegal fireworks, according to the 2011 Fireworks Annual Report released in June 2012 by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The study, which analyzes fireworks-related deaths, injuries treated at emergency rooms and law enforcement of illegal fireworks, compiled information from news reports and hospitals on such incidents.

According to the CPSC report there were at least four fireworks-related deaths in 2011 and 9,600 injuries treated in emergency rooms across the United States. None of the deaths involved legal fireworks and all of the victims were male adults. ?In fact, 68 percent of all injuries from fireworks were to males and children under 15 years old accounted for 26 percent of the total.

Sparklers and bottle rockets accounted for an estimated 1,100 injuries treated at ERs. Also, roughly half of the patients treated for fireworks-related injuries at hospital ER units suffered some sort of burns to hands and fingers (46 percent); head, face and ears (17 percent); legs (11 percent). Injuries to eyes involved contusions, lacerations and foreign bodies and accounted for about 17 percent of the injuries.
