Small Engine Repair: How to Diagnose Electrical Circuit Problems
video synopsis on small engine repair by: Chakka S.
I thought I do a video about voltage drop because it?s such a power full tool in diagnosing electrical problems in electric circuit. Hopefully we have basic understanding of electrical theory so you get more out of this video but if you don?t try and present a simple explanation so you can at least understand what about voltage drop is and how to use it to diagnose electric problem.
I got a simple circuit here connected a light bulb, switch to a voltage source. In this case it?s a battery; if I was turn on the switch current from my voltage source would flow from the battery to the light bulb and then back to the battery. Whenever u have a current flow through a circuit, if that current comes under the influence of anything that creating the resistance it?s going to get the voltage drop and we know that true because of ohms law which states that current times resistance will gives you voltage.
Somewhere in the circuit you have points where the wire connects to the light bulb, where the wire is connected to the switch and where the wires are connected to the battery. Normally we like to think of connection points and the wires are having no resistance just allowing current that freely flow through them. But in actuality all these things the connection points and the wires have some resistance and that?s what makes the using voltage drop so effective even diagnosing problem on an electrical circuit. When all the connection points are good and everything is new and the wires are new.
You are going to have a very very small voltage drop and its going to be insignificant but the older the circuit gets the more corroded these connection points get the more they loosen up over time. The more resistance it?s going to create in the circuit and because of ohms law when u have a resistance and you have a current flowing through whatever creating the resistance you are going to get voltage drops. Whenever you have a connector that lose damaged to the corroded or a wire that broken or corroded. It?s going to produce a more resistance in normal and the higher resistance it?s going to cause a higher voltage drop to be across a connector or wire. The higher the resistance or the higher the voltage drop and when that happens. What it does is it drops voltage or power from the circuit.
