How to Furnish a Contemporary Living Room ? George Slavov's ...

Remember how in the 70s there was a trend in the interior design realm, which lead to many homeowners attempting to make their homes appear ?futuristic? through swivel tub chairs, plastic seating, and tubular steel? Well it appears that the trend is working its way around again, however, our perception of ?futuristic? interiors has changed dramatically from its predecessor.

?

Many magazines portray this new futuristic living style as white, glossy, and spacious ? something similar to the environment created in the Ewan McGregor movie ?The Island?. More importantly it has been pinned with the label of contemporary due to the industrial, modernistic influences of modern day life reflected in its style. This has potentially lead to the growing online popularity of white high gloss living room furniture as many current pieces are in line with appearance of technology fashion trends ? tablet PCs, TVs, etc.

?

Seeing as the contemporary furniture scene is on the rise, we?ve decided to provide some advice on how one should furnish a contemporary living room to achieve their desired effect with colour schemes and d?cor considered in our suggestions.

?

The Effect of Space

Many modern day home interiors seek to achieve the effect of space, a characteristic encouraged by home improvement shows and articles alike, to add value to properties by offering what appears to be more space than there actually is. It isn?t difficult to achieve and is easier to implement if the room is being decorated and furnished from scratch with this effect in mind.

?

To create the effect of space in a contemporary living room, select furniture that has subtle or light colours e.g. white, cream, and pastel. White leather or upholstered seating is a common choice to compliment light or neutral coloured walls. If you?re a fan of wooden sofas, be sure to select lighter wood tones with white or neutral coloured cushions to maintain the desired illusion.

Good access to natural light is essential to illuminate the light and natural colours of the furniture, thus creating ?space?. The addition of a coffee table in the centre of the seating arrangement is a good piece of furniture to have. By selecting a clear glass or light wood table you avoid removing the space you?ve created by your other furniture colour choices. Also, the addition of a well-placed mirror can add another dimension to the room to make the living room space feel bigger.

?

A Warm and Cosy Living Room

In contrast to the spacious contemporary style, another type of living room that can be found is a much more intimate setting. This is the kind of interior that makes its occupants feel like they?re in a cosy and warm environment when setting down to watch the television or converse.

?

An intimate contemporary living room can be achieved by selecting furniture that is richer and darker in colour. This is where black, dark browns, and other dark earthy colours occupy the room with their impact. Black sofas can be complimentary to maroon/ purple walls or other darker tones, as they consume the natural light within the room rather than reflect it the way that lighter colour schemes do.

Darker features can be added to the room such as a stained wood TV cabinet or a black glossy coffee table to make the floor space appear occupied by this light consuming furniture. Dark wood furniture will also add the warmth of the natural material to this desired setting.

?

Transformation

The beauty of high gloss living room furniture is that it can be impacting yet also reflects natural light. This is a brilliant benefit as it can make the room appear more spacious and functional during the day by reflecting light around the room. However, when the room becomes occupied by the night?s darkness, the living room can become much more intimate with the darker colours as there is no natural light to reflect ? ideal considering it?s more appropriate to feel this intimacy in the evening. A similar effect is created by dark wooden furniture, which merely adds more warmth to the feel of the room, as it is associated with heat.

Hopefully you?ve found something in this article that will inspire you to create a beautiful contemporary living room environment that you will be proud of and get much pleasure from.
